That is the best way to remove the pin. Doing so prevents problems with the aperature and the pin.
Suggest frankly a new pin rather than reusing the old one if at all possible.
( I Have a pre-39 four digit as well as a 39-2)

GLK, I believe that is the case, always drive the pin out from the top, and reinstall from the bottom, being careful to drive the pin back in so it's at least flush with the rail on the slide (or slightly recessed is better). If you do it backwards you run the risk of damaging the slide hole, and the extractor pin will not stay in place......ALWAYS out through the bottom, and back in from the bottom.....
