Default model 6450 ?

A friend of mine has a NIB 4506 he is thinking of selling and brought it to me to look over. it appears to be a standard 4506 with the 2nd gen trigger guard and novak fixed sights. the box label is marked model 6450 and under features it said special. I have been looking for a 3rd gen .45 should it be left NIB or would you guys buy it to shoot? thanks to all, wv3568

Sounds like a transitional model distributed by RSR during the time S&W was transitioning from the second generation (645) to the third generation (4506). It is my understanding that they distributed several pistols in 9 mm and .45 ACP during this time that were somewhat of a specialty run with each variant having a hybrid model number (second and third generation model numbers "combined").

I am certainly not an expert. Just my two cents.

I would check the model number and serial number stamped in the frame and make sure it matches the box.

Check out post number 59 in the link below and do a search on this site for "RSR".

Can I See Your S&W .45 Autos?

I hope this helps.

There are a couple of threads on this. Try searching Google instead of using the search function here. VBulletin's search function isn't nearly as good as Google.

Anyway, the 6450 is essentially a 4506 only it was marked as a model 645. The model numbers are thought to be made up these guns were specially built for RSR, a large distributor. I think the serial numbers all start with RSR. The model numbers do not follow the standard system for 3rd generation pistols.

According to the SCSW it's "quite rare" with fewer than 200 being made. I think it has more value as a collectible than as a shooter, but of course if you buy it, it's your decision.

Could be an AIP pistol, the serial number will start with AIP, if it's an RSR model, it will have an RSR serial prefix and the frame will also be marked with the same model number as the box-6450, or could be a transitional gun, which would have the second gen model number on the frame but 4506 features.....

Does it look like one of these? One is a 6454 and the other a 6451. Like others have mentioned, the serial number should start with a RSR. These are rare production guns made of 2nd and 3rd generation parts. I wouldn't buy it to shoot but to flip and buy two 4506's with the money you'd possibly get for it. Even better if it has the original box.

Hi, I am new to the forum, have few questions on 645 and 4506:
(1) Can you put a 4506 slide on a 645 frame?
(2) Any modification needed?
Thank you.
