Hello S&W Forum!

I've been looking for my first 1911 for some time now. I recently decided to up my spending limit a bit. I found a new old stock SW1911 for sale. Model number 108282 with the billboard logo. It would be just under $800 once everything was said and done. Sound like a deal I should jump on? It seems like the SW1911s are pretty well liked and relatively trouble free. I'd love to get your input. Thanks!

While they may be very very good quality, I just can't get past the external extractor. It's not a true 1911 and just rubs me the wrong way.

That being said, sounds like a solid deal. Not a "bargain", but definitely fair.

Well then... Hopefully your 1911's don't have 80 series safeties, adjustable sights, beavertails, more than 7 round magazines, stainless steel, or God forbid a barrel length under 5.03".



To the OP, sounds like its a little high, but they are great pistols, and are covered by SW's lifetime warranty. I have a few and they're great shooters.

Just under $800 after everything (tax transfer fee-whatever) is done??? Hell-that sounds like a good solid price to me. I paid$740 after everything for a 108284 a year and a half ago. In this market, I'd say that was pretty good. Go price a new one if you can find one.

I have 108283, it is six years old with over 5 k rds. I have 108482, it is one year old with 1 k rds. Both guns have been flawless and are very accurate. With the lifetime warranty it is the best deal out there for a 1911. Best of luck and hope it works out for you SW.

I have that gun, got it NIB 11/03, It has the JRD prefix. For 9yrs it has been one of my range beaters with about 22,000 rounds through it. No issues, none. Still shoots better than I can hold, frame to slide is still tight as new. It has MIM parts, only the FPS needed replacing but never stopped the gun. I have more than a few 1911s and its as good as any of them.
As you can tell, I think it is a great sample of the 1911. Good Luck

I bought mine about 5 years ago, cost me $700 total. It is my favorite semi-auto, shoots great, feels great, looks great (it's my avatar). $800 today is a good price, go for it!

I bought this one for $703 (actually it was a Christmas present from my wife) and though a slightly newer Model all the S&W 1911s I've examined all seem to wreak of quality. Plus with a lifetime warranty you can't go wrong. Bottom line S&W produces a really good 1911.

I think it's a fair price for a new S&W 1911. Mine has been very dependable and very accurate.....go for it.

1911 pistols that come with ventilated triggers, rowel hammers, beaver tail grip safeties, ambidextrous thumb safeties, lowered and flared ejection ports, white dot or night sights, different barrel lengths, different calibers, and so on are not "true 1911s" since they vary from the original, right? Good luck in finding a 1911 today that is made exactly like the original!

S&W makes great pistols...and the only downside to the external extractor (other than 1911 purists who don't like it)is that it isn't as easy to adjust and replace as an internal extractor. However, many people feel that it is a better design...and it must be, or else why would virtually every semiautomatic pistol made today have an external extractor?

I say buy it. S&W makes great 1911s...I've had a few, and I like them very much.

In either CA. or OK. that is a great price, i paid $929.- in CA. and saw it for $900.- in OK. last week. For my money the S&W 1911 108282 is great entry level 1911, far better fit and finish than the Colt and only the Sig's and Kimber's were close. Time will of course tell if i made the right choice.

I've had two of the 108282's and still keep one. Despite having 1911's costing much more, it's always been a favorite. You can't go wrong with any SW1911 for under $800 OTD IMHO. Yes, I've seen them A LITTLE cheaper but only on the net where shipping and transfer fee's apply.

I have a billboard, a first gen 2003. I bought it from a pal two years ago NIB for 675, an extraordinary price IMO. I am told the early ones used lots of high quality internals made by Wilson and others. I can't confirm that, but can confirm I've put about 3K rounds through it, virtually all reloads, with nary a hiccup. I wouldn't sell it for twice what I paid.

I'm glad I found this thread. I was looking to pick up this model of 1911 once my permit comes in but it didn't seem to be getting much love. Nice to see it is highly regarded.

I've had two model 108282s (in early JRD serial number range). Both ran flawlessly, were more accurate than I could hold them and held up well over the years. I still keep one and it's a favorite despite having 1911's that cost 3x as much. It's stock with the exception of the Dawson front sight, STI short trigger and stags. IMHO, this model is one of the best bang for the buck 1911's out there. Call me crazy but I like both the external extractor and the "Billboard" logo.

Do all 108282 models have the "Billboard" on the slide, or only the older ones? The one on the S&W corporate web page does not show the billboard... I wonder if Bud's new/old stock has it?

It is an attractive price, for sure.

I read the pros and cons on the various Brazilian, Filipino, and Turkish made M1911's, or guns with frames from those countries and parts/assembly in USA, and while I am sure they are all good, there is a little voice telling me that "made in USA" is the best way to go.

The S&W 1911's are made in Houghton, Maine, correct?

What the heck is a transfer tax fee?This isn't a class 3 item.

I have two S&W 1911's and both have been 100% and very accurate. Any time I take someone to the range I have a variety of stuff but without fail they gravitate to the 586 revolver and the 1911...every time!
