Default S&W 422 Advice

I have been a long-time lurker on this site and I have always enjoyed the depth of knowledge and insight provided here. I hoped that my first post would be something in which I could provide my own insight or experience. Instead, I am seeking advice.

I currently own several 3rd Gen S&W pistols and I love them. I also own a 642 centennial j-frame. I had posted my j-frame for trade hoping to get a .45acp 3rd Gen. Instead, I was offered a trade, my j-frame with wood grip, boot grip and iwb holster for a 422, 4.5" barrel, 2 magazines and a nylon holster. The 422 seems to be in good shape but I am torn as to whether to make the trade. The j-frame seems to be a more valuable firearm but I would love to add a 422 to my collection. Am I being foolish for assuming that it may be a long time until I see another 422 available? Is it a fair trade? Or should I hold out for a 3rd Gen centerfire pistol?

Full disclosure: To the best of my knowledge, the person offering a trade is not a member of this forum so you will not be selling out one of your own.

In general, your 642 is worth more dollars than a 422. You should also keep in mind that a 3rd Gen .45 is worth more dollars than your 642. You are right that neither are falling off trees these days so it's more about what you want and what you are willing to wait for. I would defintely trade the 642 for the 422 plus cash or 642 plus cash for a 3rd gen .45. The 642 is definitely more common so if you want to replace it in the future it will be easier to find than either of the other two.

I bought a 422 a couple years ago for $250 with box in new condition. By todays standards that would be a steal. I would guess the 422 to be worth at least $300. I would think that the 642 would bring about $375 or more.

The 422 is a great little pistol and I enjoy plinking with it. The twelve round mags are still available from Smith as of a few weeks ago. Expensive but they still had them.

Hope this helps.

And there are some 3rd gen 45's out there that are police trade ins and can be had for equal money to your 642.
