Default Medium frame .380 pistols?

Today at a local gun store I saw a .380 semi auto pistol that was just over 6" in length and weighed 20 oz.

When I picked it up I was surprised to see that it was .380. For its size why wouldn't someone prefer a larger caliber? What is the benefit of .380 in this size pistol? For same size one could have a 9mm, .40 or.45?

Guess I was assuming self defense. is there another use for this large .380 besides self defense?

Ruger just newly introduced such a pistol in their lineup, and one of their advertising points is that the slide spring is of lower weight and therefore easier to rack by a person that has lesser hand strength.

The Beretta 80 series were always large for caliber, but made them a lot nicer to shoot over the super small/light weight .380s'. For someone more recoil sensitive and/or less hand strength I can see a market for them.
