Hi Ron,
The TAS prefix dates to late 1986, and TBR dates to 1988. According to the Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd Edition, the first serial range was TAK0001-TAK7727.

p.s. You commented on the pic of my 645 in another post. The walnut stocks did not come on it from the factory. Black checkered nylon grips were standard, and they came with the pistol. The walnut stocks that are on it are from S&W though, I purchased them separately.

I bought mine, TAK21xx, on Jan. 2, 1986, from the first batch my dealer got. It was from the first big batch of 645s shipped from S&W.

Then i guess my TAS is later then i think bought brand new in box 12/86 so it looks like less then 36 months of production.. no wonder theyare not as easy to find as some say they are. maybe some police turn in's.. but not new in box anymore.

my TBR#8510 must be the last of them then.heck maybe a data base for 645's..I would be very surprised if there was still 500 or so still new in box.RON K.

My 645 is also a TAR. TAR 19XX to be a little more exact. And like yours, has the Pachmyer grips but with fixed sights. Bought used ~20 years after yours.

Hey guys. I own 6 of the 645's in varying ages. My oldest is TAK23xx, which appears to be from 1986. I do know these were available in 1985. I also own one of the transitional 6450's never fired from the late 80's. It was a prototype/hybrid of the 645/4506. It looks like a cross between a 645 and a 4506. Those of you with TA,TB, or any other lettering should now that SW did not release them necessarily in alphabetical order. You should know that all of these are magnificent pieces and great for collecting or everyday shooting. Beautiful guns friends. I will post my pics for comparison.

I bought one recently (a 645 and wow what a nice gun) and the serial number is TAV83XX? Is there any rhyme or reason to numbers?

Glad the Dad had the best.... I also would check with S&W I am sure they might have some parts left.or borrow one and have one made. but i am sure that little part might get pricey.good luck. Ron K.

I realise the 4506 is the later model but I recently had the extractor replaced. Only problem S&W will not sell the extractor for that model, factory install only. Good side is there was no charge, cost me $14.00 to my local gunsmith to send it to S&W. I would also check Numrich and Brownells for the part. Jim.

I built the first set of these back in the late 80's I was told they were going out to the FBI. Not sure of the exact year. These were the first guns I built using the three letter prefix serial numbers.

I'm also in the "TAR" serial range myself on my 645 (TAR33**).

Mine has the total wraparound Pachmayer grip on it currently but I'm chasing a set of nylon OEM S&W grip panels.

4 weeks ago,I bought TAR8199.

I was browsing the local gun shop. That’s always a bad idea. I spotted my/the 645. I’m pretty sure it was a cop gun. The rear sight was battered, as was some of the checkering on the back strap, it has the idiot scratch on the frame. 3 mags, no box. $479 in October of 2023; that’s not a bad price, I thought.

Hard telling when the last time this thing had been fired. When I got it home I loaded it up with some of my Lyman SWC reloads and got to shooting. I have put 5 shots under 2 inches at 25 yards. Ok, I only did that once (so far). But it happened. Most 5 shot groups go 2.5 inches at 25.

I had 40-50 rounds through the 645 when I realized that I hadn’t even bothered to lube it. It was perking along just fine, bone dry.

I had read a million times: bla bla bla Boat Anchor. Bla bla bla Boat Anchor. Mine weighs slightly less than my 1911. Your results may vary.

Sorry I’m late to the party. Could someone repeat when the TAR guns were made?

Thanks, Rod.
