Default Where is the Chiefs Special Semi-Auto?

While looking at a recent gun mag, there is a nice looking all metal "Chiefs Special" semi-auto in 9mm shown with a list price of $782, but I can find nothing on it at S&W's website.

The gun mag is a recent issue, so it's hard to believe it's been discontinued already. Is this a soon to be released model?

I don't know about any upcoming model. But, S&W made a Chief's Special, in 9mm, 40 S&W and 45 acp.....starting around 1998 or so to about 2006 (I think). These are called "CS9", "CS40" and "CS45", respectively. All are 3" barreled, subcompact sized, with single stack mags and decocker/ safety on the slide (like all of the 3rd Gen. pistols). Alloy frames, either anodized black (with the slide to match)....or anodized silver, with stainless slides.

I had a CS9, until a couple of weeks ago. Great gun, though a little small for me.

Could these be what you are talking about ? If so, these have been out of production since 2006-2007, if memory serves.

Maybe S&W will be bringing them back ?! That would be wonderful, but I am not confident of that.

Yes, those are them. I don't know why these were included in a recent gun mag, if they haven't been produced in 7 years. All the other guns they shown are currently available models as far as I know.

CS9s',CS40s',CS45s',relatively publicly unknown pistols,2 years ago you had to search thru the catalog to find them. I don't think they're listed this year. I bought my CS9 for 550.
Google search images for S&W CS9 and you'll see many variations.

I haven't heard of a chiefs special in Semi-Automatic. The closest thing I can vouch for is a 3913 or 3914 in blue or stainless. A fine firearm indeed in 9mm.

Ah, well there it is. The value of the CS models are increasing rapidly, I can tell you.....so it may not be long before the average selling price is something like $782.

Here are a couple pics....for those that have never seen one. (My former CS9, which now resides with a good friend.)

They are talked about on this forum often. Very much in demand among S&W enthusiasts, but not well known outside of that circle.

Yes, but are they still being produced? The magazine that was showing the CS9 was only listing currently available handguns as far as I know.

No. S&W is not making any of the 3rd generation pistols for commercial sale. They will make them under contract for law enforcement agencies, but only if they can't CONvince the agency into buying M&P pistols.

A couple of agencies still issue or allow their officers to buy 3rd generation semis, but not many.

I doubt that S&W would reintroduce the CS series pistols as the CS9 and CS40 would directly compete with The Shield in 9 and 40.

The all metal guns are much more expensive to produce than the M&P or M&P Shield guns, so it's harder to sell them at a competitive price point.

A large volume LGS north of Boston has a CS 9 for sale on their used list. It won't be there for long.

I'd buy it, but I already have one.

I doubt we will see a new production CS9. Who would buy the "shield" if they could have a nicer 9mm compact? Regards 18DAI

BM1 very successfully converts compact 3rd Gen 40's, and 45's to 10mm. Search for 10mm conversions there are several very informative threads. The 10mm compact that S&W never made ~

Yeah, I learned my lesson about taking some magazine "catalog" listings at face value many years ago. (I also was once or twice disappointed to learn that a gun make/model which looked interesting wasn't actually still in production at the time I saw it listed in some magazine.)

Anyway, the CS40 was dropped from production a few years before the CS9 & CS45 were dropped. I was told the reason was that fewer than 100 units were sold by the factory one year, so they dropped it. It was felt that the snappy recoil of the .40 cartridge in the diminutive CS40 was probably responsible (even though the company had Hogue design the stock grip panels for the little CS guns).

The CS9 & CS45 remained strong sellers, requiring no real advertising as they sold by word-of-mouth and were popular off-duty weapons.

Like the TSW's, they were eventually dropped from the commercial catalog, but remained in limited production for LE orders/sales. Their recommended retail pricing was pretty hefty toward the end of their commercial run, but they'd also been incorporating some revisions and improvements, too.

The DAO versions (with the letter "D" added to their model numbers) weren't really seen in abundance, and after the introduction of the stainless (slide) models the carbon steel models seemed less common, as well.

The CS40 & CS45 were built on the .45 frame and had 3.25" barrels. The CS9 was slimmer and had a 3" barrel.

FWIW, I've been going back & forth on ordering a new Shield 9 (after having spent an afternoon using one belonging to another instructor). Handy, accurate, nicely balanced & slim little 9mm.

The thing is, though, that among my existing 9's I have a CS9. The same 7-rd capacity as with the Shield 9's 7-rd mags, and the ability to use the 8-rd 3913 mags ... and although the rubber grips make it slightly thicker than the Shield in my hand, it fits my hand as if made for me. Great TDA trigger and excellent reliability.

I suppose I could resolve the slightly thicker grip dimension if I ever got around to modifying a set of factory grips (I have a couple pairs of the original 3913TSW cutaway grips that might be handy for such a conversion) ... but I'm lazy, and the existing grips are perfectly suited for my hands.

When it comes right down to it, I tend to prefer my CS9 to my CS45, and I've had the CS45 longer.

While I have carried my CS40 on a 1200 mile trip, I still prefer the 4006 to it. The length of the gun, while making it great for CC, does produce greater felt recoil and has a very short sight picture.

Well if anybody does not know about the CS, once you put one in your hand you will never forget. Or at least I couldn't. I picked up a CS45 couple years ago for $300. Planned on reselling it and making a couple bucks. I have turned down $500. I don't know if I could ever part with it now. Went to my leather guy had him make a tuckable holster. I have never been tired of carrying it. Super comfortable, and accurate like you wouldn't believe. I have very large hands, and I think it is more comfortable to shoot than most full size. If you get a chance, get one. If you regret getting it, let me know, I will buy it from you.

The CS9 is possibly the greatest Semi-Auto (definitely the best CC Semi) S&W ever produced IMO.

Single Stack, perfect grip-size, sweet Novak Sights, and a dang soft shooter. I carry my Model 19-3 75 % of the time, but whenever I carry a Semi It's my CS9.

Now I'm on the hunt for a CS45!

Just as a public service announcement for those with a CS9, Mitch Rosen makes a very nice OWB holster for these pistols....

I have one of the CS9's It was in a local shop for some time and they couldn't believe anyone hadn't bought it. I picked it up for under $425. It's my favorite carry gun now. Anyone know where to get some extra mags for it ?

That's the only down side. I've been looking for extra mags for three years and lucked onto an ad on this forum a week or so ago. The ad was up something like 40 minutes when I responded and I beat two other offers by three minutes.

You can find them on Ebay sometimes, but at retail+ prices.

"Alloy frames, either anodized black (with the slide to match)....or anodized silver, with stainless slides."

kframer- You didn't mention the two tone guns with a black frame and silver slide like my CS40.

I stumbled upon a second mag for mine at a local pawn shop. I just off handed asked the guy if he had one and lo and behold right on the front of the rack hung one. Usually not that lucky.

I just bit the bullet and paid $53 (total) for one directly from S&W. Used ones were about as much on Ebay and auction sites when you could find them.
