4013 at the pawn shop
I am a big fan of the 3rd gen S&W's. My favorite pawn shop has a nice 4013 priced at $450 with 2 mags. I'm sure I can talk him down to $400 but I'm torn. As much as I love the 4013 I had decided on a M&P compact 40. Lighter weight higher capacity plus I have a M&P Pro 40 already and love it. Now the 4013 shows up and makes my decision tougher. I know the 4013 is out of production and getting hard to find. I want to buy both but as bad as I want to I can't buy them all. I really want a 4053 same aluminum frame but DAO but I have not ran across one. Another problem with the 4013 the mags are getting hard to find. I have never regretted buying a 3rd gen Smith but this is a tough one. I might have to just get the 4013 and buy a M&P compact later unless a 4053 shows up.

I love my 4013 and paid about the same price 2 years ago for mine. You rarely see 4013's come up for sale and the mags come around frequently enough to get what you need. I don't own any M&P's so can't give you the same comparison but you can't go wrong with the 4013. Good luck on your decision.

No brainer! Buy the out of production gun now. You can get an M&P any day.

^^ What they said. Get it while you can. Run, don't walk. You can save up for the M&P later.

If you really want the 4013 get it and save and buy the M&P later. You won't have any trouble finding the M&P later.

It would be a long drive from Oregon but I guess I'll just have to put it on layawat until the tax refund gets here.

If I was a little closer to the area you are in I would be willing
to drive to that pawn shop & remove the problem for you! The
4013 is one of my Grail guns, & I've come close several times
but something always seems to happen.

The plan is to get it as long as nobody beats me to it. I would have on layaway now but I had a bill due I had to pay. If it makes it until Friday or if my income tax refund gets here it will be mine. I fondled it yesterday and it is in very good condition. I don't think it has been shot or carried much.

Buy the 4013. After you shoot it - without any extra $ outlay for Apex parts - and experience a good trigger, superb reliability and tack driving accuracy, FROM A GOOD LOOKING GUN, you will not think about an m&p again.
Good luck with your decision! Regards 18DAI

Don't get me wrong I love the 3rd gen Smiths and I'm going to try to get the 4013 but I love my M&P Pro too and I'll eventually own the compact as well. I have this philosophy that there is no such thing as too many guns.

With layaway as an option, definitely get the 4013. If for some reason it does not live up to your expectations, I'm sure it would take about an hour to sell here on The Forum. 3rd Gen now, M&P later.

I have no doubt I'll love it I love the 3913 I picked up for my girlfriend but I am more of a fan of the 40 than the 9mm. If it shoots as well as the 3913 it will be a keeper. I wish my tax money would get here now that I've decided to get it I hope it's not gone.

I have a 4053 single stack that I recently began to carry. Fantastic gun. Looking forward to Underwood having .40 S&W ammo in stock again.
I suspect with a good belt and holster you'll find a thin 4013 easier to conceal than the fat M&P and will wind up carrying it more.

Absolutely positively no brainer.
Like the guys said, you can buy an M&P any day. If you like plastic, and DA only strikers - that's not a bad way to go. Me? I like alloy frames and DA/SA. So it's a 3rd gen or SIG (or maybe a Beretta 92F Compact).
If that gun is still for sale, slap some cash down on it before it is gone!
By the way, has anybody seen the prices on Beretta Cheetahs (85's and 84's) and Browning BDA's these days? ($800-$1100).
It seems like a lot of people really, really like compact guns that are metal framed. It's a shame S&W doesn't get this and make a line of 3913/4013/3914/4014/4040 "classic carrys" or something similar.
I'll take mine in Scandium please.
