Hogue Exotic Wood on 5906
 

The LGS offered a set of Hogue Exotic Wood grips for a 5906 in Pau Ferro for $25, so I decided to try them on. They look nice from the side, but feel a bit thicker than the OEM plastic grips. They also look thick from the back.

What is your opinion of these as replacement grips/stocks?

I used to own a pair for my 5906. I really liked the way they looked and how they fit the pistol, but they were just too thick for me. And I have pretty large hands too. However, you really did get a good price on them. Just give them some time and see how they grow on you.

Used to have em. Didn't like em. Might try and texture them someday and try again.

Love the look but my hands are just to small. I have a pair that I got about ten years ago and paid like $150 to $190. Best of luck.

They look great. That said, I don't even like the Houge rubber grips on any if my gen 3's. just too thick.

I had Hogues on my Sig 226. They looked nice but were too thick. That seems to be the most common complaint about them. I feel like the 3rd gens and aftermarket grips don't work together so well. It's a shame because stainless and wood look so nice together.

It's really a shame that S&W went to that design on the gen 3 guns. There was nothing wrong with the conventional two-piece grips on the gen 2, and it would have opened up a greater aftermarket had they remained that way for a couple decades. But the design is, by its very nature, totally limiting. Hogue is one of the best in the business, but even they can't get around the design requirements, and thus, their grips are just too big and bulky for the G3 Smiths. I too, have rather large hands, and still can't get comfortable with the wood grips I had previously tried on my 4506 and 6906.

The stock plastic grips are extremely thin. Too bad they're horrible to actually touch and hold...

Several have said they love the look but found the wood grips too thick. Has anyone attempted to reshape the grips to make them thinner in the right places?

Thank you! I have been wondering the exact same thing! The plastic grips are very thin, so structurally or mechanically there does not seem to any limiting factor. I have been thinking about buying a pair of the Hoges in Rosewood for cocobolo (plain) for my 5906, and then having a stockmaker friend of mine reshape them thinner and checker them.

Has anybody tried this?

I'm not a big fan of the fake wood grain over plastic. I know some are. I'd rather have real wood, or just stick with the plastic.

I have seen posts from other users stating that the Hogue exotic wood grips that are checkered seem significantly thinner than the smooth ones?? Don't know if that's just a perceived feeling, or if there is actually a measurable differnece. The ones I had were the smooth ones.

I want someone to make thin G10 for the full line of S&W pistols. Lots of choices for the 1911 that look great and have excellent feel. I will buy!

On the hogue auction site they have micarta grips available, I don't know how thin they are but it is a option.

Let me close with this: I took the 5906 with the thick Hogue grips to the range today and found that whereas my groups were a bit left with the OEM grips, the Hogue resulted in moving everything to the right just a tad. I think I attribute this to the thicker grips forcing me to keep the trigger on the 1st finger pad [where it should be] rather than in the 1st joint [where it shouldn't be].

Interesting, because they certainly look thinner, but I thought maybe that was just the way they photographed. I like the checkered ones better anyway.
