First time poster (hiiii!) and relatively new owner of a 4516-2. Thank you very much for all the info; truly enlightening for a newbie to read!

I've just accuired a fairly clean 4516-1, it's my 3rd, third gen S&W (908s & 910s), it came with one mag - yellow follwer & marked "this magazine must have a yellow follower", and does not appear to have gone back to the factory for any modifications, still has the single guide rod spring & no bushing. Have not shot it yet as I have to wait 10 days just to have it in my hands, but my question is do I have to find used mags with the yellow follower or are the later mags with the black follower ok ??? I like to have at least 3 mags for every gun so all replys will be appreciated, Thank You

I believe the later mags with the black followers will work with no problems in your 4516-1....those have had the "tweeks" made by S&W already

Any 4516 mag, with any color follower will, in my experience, work in your pistol.

Ok, thanks guys, I just ordered 2 new factory mags from Midway yesterday, hopefully they'll work fine, the 8 reviews on their site all said they works flawlessly, I'll let you know after my first range outing. Thanks again

Post the three letter prefix of the serial number and we might be able to help out.

Not my gun, but there is a 4516-1 for sale on a local (to me) forum. Gun and two magazines. He's asking $550.00. If anyone is interested PM me for a link.

Not sure what I have here, as I just picked this up. Single guide spring, and has the bushing, or so I think it does. Looks like an upside "T" stamped on the left side trigger guard. Is this a 4516 no dash, or a 4516-3?

Looking at the SN#, stepped frame, & hood size I'd say it's a 4516-0 (no dash). That's the skinny guide rod (.237") but it looks like it has the recoil spring for the fat guide rod (.290"), or maybe just the dual's outer spring. It should have the (factory) dual spring set on it instead.

I haven't shot it yet. Will this spring setup be an issue? And yes, the guide rod is very skinny.

Some more pics of the 4516 vs. my 4516-1

You've only got half the spring in there the gun should have. The blue paint on the spring and how loose it is on the guiderod tells me it's the outer spring of the nested spring set. It's common practice around here to replace recoil springs on a newly acquired gun since you usually have no idea how much mileage is on the original spring/s. I recommend NOT shooting it until you have fresh springs in there.

The factory parts you need are:
108660000 outer spring
108670000 inner spring

Or if you can't find those,
SprinCo tactical made a batch of very high spec nested spring sets thanks the encouragement of folks on this forum

Towards the bottom of this page you'll find them.
Tactical Springs & Machine Gunners Lube

If all else fail you can still stick a 20# flatwire in there.

Cheers
Bill

BMCM nailed it. Missing inner spring.

Good news is that its a 4516 no dash. Thinnest and lightest of the 4516's. Think 3913 on steroids. Get an inner spring and go enjoy that fine 45. But do as BMCM advised and replace the inner spring before you shoot it. There were right at 5000 examples of the 4516 no dash made before it was discontinued. No sense risking damage to such a fine pistol.

mpi as far as I know, there was not a 4516TSW. While one should never say never where s&w is concerned, I have never even heard of a 4516TSW being prototyped.

The closest you can get to a 4516TSW, IMO, is a 4516-3. It has a few TSW features such as the larger barrel hood and MIM hammer and trigger. Hope this helps! Regards18DAI

TCP is an early production 4516 no dash. 1989 or 1990. Fine pistol. Congrats! Regards 18DAI

Bought a 4516-2 with black hammer and trigger and by reading this forum found out how lucky I hit it. Price with 6 Mags was under $400 and I almost feel guilty. I want to thank you guys for saving me hours of research, you guys know your guns. I only buy guns made in the USA and this one had been used by a Local Sheriff's office which I don't think had ever been issued, incredibly low wear.

I have only one question, is there somewhere I can match the serial number to the year of manufacture? Serial # starts with VDV. Thanks for any help you can give.

Default Serial number to year manufactured

Whymejake -
According to the SCSW (3rd ed), your serial number prefix would place its manufacture somewhere between 1994 and 1998.

I just managed to lay my hands on a minty 4516 no dash, rare as hens teeth up here in Canada. Serial number is TCS2111. Any one have any idea of it's vintage?

Default 4516-2, 457's and a 4586 ...

Looking to add a .45 3rd Gen to my collection I purchased this 4516-2 from a popular auction site before I knew the differences between the dash or no dash models:

Following that, I went looking for the Model 457 to have as a carry gun (I prefer black guns for carry) I ended up getting two 457's :

Rounding out my collection (accumulation?) with this DAO 4586:

Now I guess I'll be looking for a Shorty 45.

Nice looking .45s. I have a question for you about the grips...

Is the trigger reach any better with the wood grips than with the rubber grips?

I tried the rubber on my 4516-2. Just too fat for me. Wondering if the wood is worth a try.

It does kinda look like they're "scooped out" more on the backstrap.

Thanks.

If anything the Hogue wood grips are fatter than the rubber variety. The "scooped out" look is because the 4516 has an extended beavertail compared to the 457.

The standard Delrin plastic S&W grips are about the thinnest available, I'd try a straight grip set for the best reach for smallish hands.

Of course with wood you can sand them down to your liking.

There's a similar thread about the grips on the 3913 on this forum. What I, and a number of other people have had success with is putting grip sleeves (either Hogue or Pachmyar) on over the stock Delrin grips. I think it gives a better feel to the grips and eliminates the sort of slippery feeling of the Delrin.

They are cheap enough that you can buy them and toss them if you don't like how they work.

My 457 came with the Hogues, and they feel pretty good to me. If I ever come across a cheap set of the OEM grips, I might give them a try.

Thanks for input on the grips, guys. It'd be nice to try a wood option... but I will probably end up going with a grip sleeve.

I emailed KSD about 4516 grips. Never heard from them. I wonder if their CS45 grips would fit... other than leaving a gap at the bottom.

Just little changes thats all. Doesnt really mean ones better than the other. I could care less about the dashes. About the only thing worth mentioning about it is what some people call the quote NO DASH unquote just means they are trying to squeeze more money out of ya when they try to sell the hunk of metal to you...

4516-1 purchased new in 1992. I followed directions of -1 mags only. Never an issue of any type in all those years, however, total round count since new is less that 1000 rounds. Eats Hard ball and any manufacture of HP rounds with the greatest of ease.

I prefer the 4516-1 to the similar size Detonics compact 1911 probably because I like the S&W semi-auto action (back to the original 9mm pre-39s) and safety better than carrying a 1911 cocked and locked.

Always had an aversion to carry cocked and locked. If it was necessary, would pull hammer on 1911 to 1st click notch where hammer is off of the firing pin (yes I know there is a safety bar in there), safety off.

Of course that requires a manual manipulation of hammer to full cock before firing but I believe more likely to prevent an accidental discharge.

Best Regards ....

They are indeed Tritium night sights. As nocents posted a link for them I've been late in reply.

I find the Big Dots to be excellent for fast acquisition in a carry gun. My old eyes pick up the large front sight quickly and just setting it on the rear post gives adequate combat accuracy.

Here are the same sights on my 3914 DAO (and no those are not my hands, I prefer pink nail polish):

My 3G .45 accumulation took a major jump forward with the acquisition of the heavily modified 4516-1 that BMCM spent four months in the making.

See the We're way beyond Dremel now, Melted & Melonited 4516-1 sticky thread concerning it's build. Too bad the photos are a victim of the hijack by photo bucket.

The Master Chief chose the Big Dots for it which happens to be my first choice for a carry gun. They are on my 457 I really like them for very quick acquisition and combat accuracy.

I put a set of Hogues on them to match the 457 and other carry guns I have, but I quickly went back to the factory Delrins as changing anything BMCM put on the gun seemed like sacrilege, so back to factory grips after 15 minutes.

Anyone have an idea of date of manufacture? The serial number starts with TED.

If BMCM ever offers that "package" of mods, I will be first in line. I even have a LNIB 4516-1 ready for him to improve.

Fine pistol! And extrodinary craftsmanship too! Regards 18DAI

Every time I read a thread on the 4516 family (especially 18DAI’s) I reminded of the old Snoopy cartoon... curse you, Red Baron! So far, I have picked up a 4553TSW and have a 4516-1 inbound. No telling what’s next.

You should get a 4516 no dash Arizona Gunner.

Its the thinnest and lightest of the 4516s. A fine pistol.

Its appropriate that my 4,516th post is about one of my favorite 45s. Regards18DAI

So, 18DAI, where in this "dash" timeline does the 4536 fit in? (My personal favorite mini .45)
Thanks for sharing your expertise,

The 4536 was made for one year only,1990-91. So that would put it in the end of 4516-1 production and prior to the 4516-2 start up.

Hope this helps! Regards 18DAI

Picked up a VG condition 4516-1 from a LGS for $400 on Weds.

I knew nothing about this model of Smith but glad I bought it!

18DAI,
Regarding the magazines. Is there any real science to the "use only in 4516-1" marked magazines? I am well aware of the of the follower and the round retention dent upgrades on the full size 4500 series magazines, but they are all cross compatible for all 645/4506 guns to my knowledge. Are not all the 4516 mags also cross compatible?
blessings to you and yours, fuzzy

My no dash 4516 purchased new 25Oct89 has dual recoil springs. Not a reliable shooter.

Fuzzymcnab the magazines with the yellow follower with the warning to use only in the 4516-1 work in all the variants of the 4516. I have 3 that are my "range only mags". No problems or issues using them in a 4516 no dash, 4516-1, 4516-2 or 4516-3 LE Special order.

Now that said, the only mags that I would use, for serious purpose, in ANY 4516 variant, are the last revision with the black followers. And I change my mag springs in my carry mags every 3 years or 3000 rounds. Cheap insurance to ensure my compact 45s maintain their bet your life reliability. Hope this helps! Best regards, 18DAI

Yes sir, that does help indeed. I thought that was the case, and agreed, I have the most confidence in the later black follower mags, although I do not carry the 4536.
