Unusual (I think) Model 59
I'm not an expert on Model 59 pistols (or anything else, for that matter) but this one has at least one or two unusual features. Comments welcome.
Regards,
Kevin Williams

Wonder why they machined it like that?

Most interesting
My guess would be a slot for a shoulder stock......maybe they were looking at setting up some 59's for SWAT or spec op's applications.....that time frame the 59 and the Hi pwr were about the only game in town for hi cap service pistols ( maybe they had seen a HP with a shoulder stock), and couple that with two 29's.....I am thinking that they were doing some evaluations for something they had in mind....but that is just my guess....maybe somebody out there was in the MSP back then and can enlighten us.

Very interesting gun, Kevin. Thanks for posting. I'll look forward to watching to see what expert opinions follow.

The first thing I noticed was the unusual location of the model & serial number. I wonder how that came to be. The slot is definitely for a shoulder stock. It makes me wonder if it came that way from Smith, was modified by the LE agency or by some enterprising individual. We may never know.....

Interesting pistol.
The backstrap definitely looks like it was made for a stock but doesn't look to fit the frame quite right.
It's also missing the lanyard loop. ?
Neat seeing one that the frame is relieved for the safety lever(s) on both sides of the frame.
Does the barrel bushing also surround the recoil spring guide at the muzzle, figure 8?
Is the recoil spring captured by the bushing (early slide) or by the slide (early bushing on a later slide)?

What strikes me about the gun is how handsome it is. I remember that at the time I never considered it that way. I guess that was in comparison to the Model 39. Now, after all these years of looking at modern 9's, it does seem handsome.
