Default Model 39...Lets See Some PICS...

Hey all,

I have always liked the Model 39. I had a buddy that used to have one and it was a great pistol. I had always intended on getting one for myself, but you all know how that goes. Always something newer, cooler, on the TIPPETY TOP of your list at the time and so on.

Now with all the newer S&W autos the M39 doesn't show up very often. I've seen some really nice custom 39's over the years, I'd like to see more of them. Heck I even like seeing the STOCK version.

So I thought I'd ask you all if you wouldn't mind posting pics of the M39 in all it's different finishes, grips, custom touches and so forth. Just post 'em all.

Also tell about your thoughts on the 39.

Can't wait to see what shows up.....

No doubt it'll make me want one all over again.

Thanks for your time.

Nalajr

One other thing I forgot to ask.

What other variants of the M39 are there or where made in later years? Is there a double stack version? An adjustable sight version? I am talking about the same length barrel and looks like the m39.

Thanks

The double stack version of the model 39 is the model 59, a fourteen round magazine capacity, wider grip frame, and plastic (unfortunately) grip panels. A fully adjustable rear sight was offered as an accessory by Smith & Wesson....

Here are some 39s, as well as a model 59, obvious with the plastic grips and straight backstrap, an apparent attempt to limit the "fat" grip of the double stack frame, although for those who preferred, Smith & Wesson offered an accessory arched backstrap for the model 59, and it too, was made from plastic.....the model 39 pictured on the bottom left is equipped with the fully adjustable rear sight, which also fits the model 59....

Nothing special or out of the ordinary. Just a clean 39-2.

My one and only. I gave this to myself for Christmas 1975. The wife was a little upset to see what Santa brought me that she didn't know about!!

The 39-2's are extremely nice shooting 9mm handguns. They just fit most hands.

LORD have mercy those are some awfully nice pistols guys. Love seeing them. Looks like I have a couple more to add to my "WISH LIST."

One thing, what is the metal "cover" type thing that is under the corner of the grip(upper right) and right under the thumb safety? Looks kinda strange. Doesn't take away from the overall beauty though.

One funny thing that renewed my desire of the M39 and it's siblings. I was watching one of the Halloween movies, one of the cruddy ones, H4, 5, 6, 17, who knows which one. In this one Michael escapes and Loomis tracks him to a gas station on the side of the road where he's killed everyone in the place. Michael busts out in a truck and tries to run Loomis over and he comes up shooting. He had a pearl handled, bright chrome M39, gorgeous pistol. I watched those scenes over and over just to see that pistol. That made me want one again. Sorry for the boring story though.

How do you all think the M39 and it's brothers in other finishes can stand up to the 9mm semi's of today that are so popular?

Let see more...
Thanks all.

Having an M&P 9mm full-size, I see that not only will they stand up beside, but they are much sought after still! I have this nickel 39-2, that I fell into, and I like it because of the fit, pleasant shooting, overall shootability of the weapon! Add to that the fact that there is new intrest in single-stack 9mm's, and you have the (or one of the) best shooters out there! Does that sound predijused? When I figure out how to upload pics from my computer i will post them.

I just picked one up in a trade today! I've been looking for one in decent shape for quite a while so I am thrilled to get mine. It looks like all the other 39-2's. The guy in the gun store had no idea as to it's age but the serial number is A312xxx any idea about how old it is? Thank in advance .

That part is the sideplate, it retains the hammer and sear pins.

Default Got this in a trade this weekend

Here's my 1977 39-2, I got it in a trade this weekend. It has some honest wear, but overall pretty nice. It is remarkably similar to my Dan Wesson Guardian.
