Since I'm not an expert, I looked it up in the SCSW. The 39-2 wasn't made in stainless, but there were some nickle plated ones made. Your father's looks like the picture in the book.

A lot of people have them and like them. I have a 3904, which is a third generation version. I don't shoot it a lot, but it handles like a dream when I do.

Someone had it nickle plated. Not a factory nickle job. Appears to be brushed nickle type finish of some kind.

Factory nickle plated 39-2s had the following parts blued: hammer, rear sight, safety, slide latch, trigger, extractor, magazine, side plate. I've heard that the earlier guns: 39 no dash, are different. Does anyone know about the 39 no dash for sure?

Something does not look right to me. The 39-2 did not come in stainless, but that does not look like factory nickel to me either. The nickel 39-2 had blued hammer, trigger, side plate, slide stop lever and safety lever, didn't they? Compare the picture on page 285 of SCSW 3d Ed. Also, that nickel is not a bright as S&W factory nickel.

I recently purchased a Nickel 39-2 in original box for $450 OTD, but since it is your fathers carry gun for all those years it is priceless, no matter how it may have been altered. Something to pass on.

My 39-2 has a better trigger than my 439 or 3906.
