Default Model 41 Field Barrel

Does S&W plan on ever having available a 5 inch field barrel. These
were sold about 30 years ago or so by S&W and now they are the
most expensive barrel for the model 41 your can buy.

It just seems that they could easily sell a thousand or more of these
barrels as there are thousands and thousands of Model 41's out there.

It would not be a great feat for S&W to make a 5 inch field barrel if they are still making the 7 inch barrel.

Wink

You're going to ruin all the collector value in the existing barrels with such an idea!!! Shame on you! Seriously, the field barrel is a wonderful addition to the Model 41 and really changes the whole personality of the pistol when one is installed. They really are a treat to shoot and use.

I would agree that Smith & Wesson probably could. The last batch they did, I think, was in the early 80"s and those were shortened 7 inch tubes. The roll stamping on the ones we got in were not in the proper position as compared to the first run barrels I have seen. As we all say with Smith & Wesson...never say never.

They are selling all the 5.5" and 7" barrels they can make right now with some people waiting on a back order for months. I doubt we'll see a new factory 5" field barrel anytime in the near future. You can always have a new 7" barrel cut down by a competent gunsmith....just don't cut an older 7 3/8" barrel due to the higher collector value.

Default Field Barrels

There are 2 Brand new unfired field barrels on GB right now,
He has an opening bid of $400.00, but has a reserve.
I bid on both $500.00 and did not hit his reserve.
The EFS barrel is also an expensive barrel, your lucky if you can pick up a decent 5 inch sport barrel under $450.00.
I would buy all I would buy all I could for less than that.
Best of luck.

I couldn't find a factory 5" field barrel but when this barrel showed up in our classifieds I had to have it. I was told it was made for the Airforce shooting team. It was a 7" cut back and sleeved with a Walter Lothar barrel.
It shoots CCI SV like a champ.

Your question needs to be more specific. A very brief rundown as I understand it.

The 5" first came out in 1959, front sight was integral and there was no barrel weight. Next came the 7 3/8" cut barrels, separate front sight, plugged barrel weight hole. Then another batch with integral front sight. Late 60s the new ampersand appeared on them. Another run in the early 70s. Then another in the late 70s, from memory these were the countersunk muzzle type. Then again in the early 80s offered as spare barrel only. Then again in the mid 90s the optical only 5".
Some of these also had variations within, like, different front sights, different muzzle profiles, different ways of plugging the barrel weight hole, etc.

Now if I can just find one of each.
