Default Question about decocking lever. Slide mount vs frame mount.

I don't know if this was ever addressed before, but I tried
searching the Forum and didn't come up with any posts.

I just added a 1006 to go with my 4006, 4506, & 5906.

These 4 third gen semi autos all have slide mounted decoking levers.

I was looking in the SCSW and read where some semis have
a frame mounted decocking lever, though there were no pictures of those.

I am more of a revolver guy, and not that up on semi autos.

Why both types? Do they both serve the came purpose?

Does anybody have a picture of one with a frame mount decocking lever?

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this for me.

Stu

The frame mounted decockers are a short run 1991-92. Probably started with the 1076 FBI model who wanted the Sig style decocker on their gun. S&W offered it on the simular 4576, full size guns 4526, 1026, 4026, 5926 and compacts 4536, 6926.

Default frame mounted de-cocking lever

I found a couple of photos of these models on Google searching "s&w frame mount decocker". Reference these particular models, be advised not to disassemble the frame action parts past field stripping.....they are a bear to get back together.

S&W built the frame mounted decockers to fulfill agency requests for a pistol that operated like the SIG Sauer, a very popular LE pistol. Picture of FBI 1076 previously posted on this forum below.

Thanks for the info.

Did they both serve the same purpose (decocker/safety) and

work the same way, besides their location on the gun?

The frame-mounted decocking versions do not have a manual safety, while the slide mounted lever is usually a dual purpose control, decocking the hammer and providing a manual safety. I said "usually", because there are slide mounted decocking-only levers that were an option on some models.

Add 5924. I had one of them before the fire.
