Default Proper cleaning of a 4566?

So, I got a 4566TSW a month or so back. Used, of course. I've shot one magazine through it and it was great. It probably doesn't "need" cleaned, and it was cleaned before I even bought it, but i'm bored and would like to know how best to proceed.

I do have a cheap gun cleaning kit from wal-mart, and I've also got some Hoppe's "Gun Cleaner" as well as a bottle of Hoppe's "Gun Oil".

Where should I use the cleaner on my gun, and where should I use the oil?

I'd like to get into the habit of caring for my pistol, so in the event it needs to take care of me one day, it probably will

Google is your friend here. Some good videos up on the net. Also your owner's manual should give you some help and, if you didn't get one with your pistol, it should be available on-line.

Great pistol , Where's the pictures?? If it moves I use grease ( lubriplate 105) , I put it on with a hobby brush and it has worked well for over 20 years.

Really gun cleaning and lubrication are pretty intuitive. Get some No. 9 bore cleaner. Soak patches in it and run down the bore. Run clean and dry patches down afterwards until they come out clean and dry. I have always used CLP and had good results using it as an overall cleaner. Lubriplate is also a good suggestion. Put a little dab on the slide rails. Several have suggested online videos, and there are a lot of good ones out there. However, as suggested previously, your owner's manual is probably the best place to start.

Since you probably don't know the history of the weapon, it might be a good idea to run a brass brush thru the barrel a couple times and then follow up with some bore cleaner and patches. Use a patch or small cloth dampened with some bore cleaner and clean up the chamber and ejector. A tooth brush works well too. Once you have cleaned all the grit out, lube the slide runners with a good quality gun oil. Not a lot, just a light coat. Use a patch or cloth to apply a light coat of gun oil to all the external metal and reassemble the weapon. Give it a function test, rack the slide a couple times and dry fire. Also, I would disassemble the magazine(s) and clean the grit and gunpowder out of them. Break Free CLP is excellent for cleaning and Weapons Shield oil is great for preserving and lubing.
