Older 4053 single stack - value question
There is an LGS which I think I can get a mint early 4053 single stack gun with 3 7 round OEM mags for around $400 OTD (no box/paperwork).
I am not a fan of the DAO guns, but I think I can trade someone I know for a 4003 or 4013 which I would be interested in.
What is the value of the early 4053 single stack guns?

If I were selling mine, $400 is what I'd want for it. But I don't think I'll sell it. I prefer the DAO for carry. If you get it be sure to shoot it some before passing it on.

I like my 4053 as it is an excellent carry gun...no safety/decocker to bulk things up. My mags are the single stack variety and interchange with my 4014 (Similar to 4013 only is all black & 525 or so made). I wouldn't sell the 4053 for less than $400 either.

Another reason to buy...there was a guy making 10mm conversions to S&W 40 cal single stack guns (certain models). Different barrel/spring are replacced and the existing mags work after removing the spacer. Unable to do so with most other models. Then ya have a 10mm compact which the factory never built. I haven't heard if they are in production yet.

Man, in an aluminum-framed gun?! Wonder how that would hold up with real 10mm ammo.

Might be those S&W engineers had their reasons.
Back to the OP's Q: I honestly don't think that the single-stack DAO compact aluminum-framed 4053 is all that sought-after . . . which I think is a shame, but I think that's the way it is. I'd be surprised to see a used one retail here for more than $375.

I agree, it is a shame that it's not sought after, it's an outstanding pistol, especially the slim single stack version.
But if you're buying, it's an opportunity to get a great pistol cheap!

There's nothing wrong with buying a gun to use as trade bait later.

Oh, i've done that before. The problem is I never get around to trading them. I need to stop doing that.

Yes,
They are all holding up just fine,
Have been busy with other some things right now.
I get to fit one in here and there.

Hey Erich,
If you remember the thread on this, I spoke to the S&W Engineers on this one and it was destined to be built as a 10mm but the .40 S&W took off and it was abandoned.
That's why the ejection port in the 4013/14/53/54 is so big and the mags are 10mm size w/the spacer.
1066 SSV, This barrel conversion thing is getting a little wild
Regards,
BM1

Another reason the fullsize 40S&W guns can't be converted is the 4013/4053/4054 guns were based on the 4516 size frame instead of the 3913 size.
That gave them a longer magazine well.
