I'll start:

What is your duty handgun?
Right now it is a S&W 5903 .9mm. I just got a SW99 .9mm and am thinkning about carrying it instead

Personal or issued?
Personal

Holster used?
Safariland SSIII 070

Ammo used?
Issued Federal HST 124. I would prefer a +P or a +P+ round

Back-up gun?
S&W Bodyguard .38 SPL

Shotgun?
Mossberg 590 18"

Rifle?
Nothing right now. I tore my rotator cuff recently and have not fully recovered and decided on a rifle.

I have been carrying a 1911 for years. However with the torn rotator cuff, doc says no heavy recoiling guns.

I have to say that #5 surprises the hell out of me. Do any other departments have that policy? And are you told what you can carry off duty?

Disturbing.

In regards to #5, I worked at a University Police Department that did not allow back-up guns. We tried and tried with no luck. We even presented a proposal showing actual case studies where back-up guns saved Officer's lives. Nope, Nada, Not happening, No.

"I noticed that he's in Canada, that probably answers the question....."
Yes, that answers that. I work for the largest municipal Police Service in the Province of Ontario. No unauthorized firearms are to be carried. With 5,000 officers on my department, it wouldn't surprise me that some do carry back up guns, but it's a don't get caught scenario, or you will be in a load of serious poop.

I am issued a piece of junk M & P 45. Actually my second, as all the first issued ones were recalled. Carried in a Safariland holster. We use Speer Gold Dot ammunition. Shotgun is a Remington 870 with Federal buckshot. Rifle is an M16A1. Yep, triangular handgu ards, full auto. Obtained from US Govt.

We are allowed any back up we choose, but has to be .38 or larger and must qualify with it.

You have a fully auto M16? Wow.
It's hard to believe anyone would go for that. Obviously it is in your car when you are not, and what a prize to be stolen!

Fun to qualify with though huh?? Did they give you any of the old L.A.W.'s when they were handing out M16's? That was my favorite carry weapon of all. Better than the M203.

We have some M14s from this 1033 program.

Well, when I retired 10 1/2 years ago, life was pretty simple. You either had it with you, or you did without. I really hated doing without. I had 1600 sq. miles of patrol area.
Weapon Glock Mod. 20, 10mm
Personal
Safariland Mod. 295, level II
Win. Silvertips, 175 gr.
Backup, AMT .380. Off duty, Glock 29 10mm
Remington Mod. 870, 00 Buck, and 1 oz. slugs.
Colt 6721 A-3 Tactical, with Trijicon Reflex.
Austrian STG-58. 7.62x51, Remington Mod. 700 PSS .308 Win./Leupold 3x9 Tactical.
About 500 rds. of assorted ammunition, for all of the above.

I can't fathom the reasoning behind that policy, or that of the Ontario agency. It seems to me (I'm not in law enforcement) that the job is difficult and dangerous enough that officers should be equipped for any contingency. That would seem to allow if not mandate backup guns.

What are those agencies' positions on off-duty carry?

you need to look for employment elsewhere as the admin have demonstrated that officer safety is not job one.

I mean we're not asking for a tank or should fired rockets just because the bad guys have them, but a BUG is essential, practical, and standard police gear.

When I went to work at the University in 2000, the Use of Force ladder consisted of spray and then gun. No batons were allowed.

We got Tasers in 2007. I left in 2009.

Great place to make money, but it is a babysitting job.

When I got there the yearly arrest numbers were around 24 for the year. I came from the Sheriff's Dept. The first month there, I arrested around 12. The second month it was around 20 with half those being DUIs through campus. The third month was right at 25 with about the same number of DUIs. I was called shortly into the office and told to "cut that **** out."

Aww well

While we are on the subject, there was no batons. I was told when I asked about it, that an officer had tried to get the ASP program approved. He did not do all of his homework when he turned in the proposal.

The president of the university got on the internet and found out that an "asp" was used in history as a "tool to slay or control the unruly." So the president came back with the question of "we were going to use the sticks to slay or control his students."

The officer was not prepared with an answer and there will never be an ASP baton at the University.

You have to remember that the people running this university are all doctors or experts in their field and have no walking around sense.

"Obviously in my car when I am not"

Ummmm.....no. I unload my computer, hot spot, shotgun, rifle, and gas mask every time the car gets parked.....which is in front of my house. My vehicle is with me 24/7. If I am out of it on duty it is locked and I'm usually not far from it. I carry 3 spare keys located in 3 different spots when I'm working.

At least someone realizes this is all gov't surplus. However, they were all in excellent condition when we received them. Matter of fact, they looked to be unfired.

Our agency has multiple gas launchers. Multi shot 40 mm jobbies. Only the tactical guys have those. The tac guys carry Rock River M4s. They are also issued an MP5 in addition to an 870. A couple of the tac guys carry Benelli M4 shotguns.

Before retiring as a Special Agent for U.S. Customs, I was allowed to carry a miriad of handguns and rifles.

I carried a personally owned 1911 or Browning HP, then in 1986 I bought a Glock 17 for my tactical operations. In 1994, we no longer could carry personal weapons. I was issued a Glock 19 and a Glock 26.

Rifles, I carried M-16's until 1987, when I was selected to test and evaluate the Steyr AUG-P select-fire rifle. I carried the same rifle for 17 years, then when it had a roll pin fall out, the armours sent me a new AUG-P. I carried it for another year, then retired.

Shotgun was always a Remington 870.

Holsters varied from concealment holsters to tactical thigh rigs.

Kinda a curious.....have you inspected your M16 firing pin? is your M16 vietnam era? does it have that rare big butt firing pin?

I have only seen one in person and the owner of that firing pin did not let it leave his eye sight!

The firing pin on mine looks much the same as my personally owned AR15s. They all remind me of framing nails for some reason.....

Those of you who carry rifles, do you have to qualify on them? Seems a very high percentage of you have them. Like I said in an earlier post, that struck me as odd. Most LEO's who post here are gun enthusiasts, is there a similar percentage of non-enthusiasts who have rifles in the trunk too? Is this a recent trend? Seems everyone in Law Enforcement is almost a pseudo SWAT member now.

My department does require we qualify with the rifle. It is not a recent trend for us. I have been qualified with the rifle for 25 years. A lot of our cars have rifle racks right next to the shotgun racks, much easier to deploy than from the trunk.

The agency I retired from always had rifles in their armory....At one time I was issued an M-14 ( a real M-14), then we were issued M-16's in 1991 and then M-4's later ( these were select fire weapons) Many agencies have been authorizing and/or issuing AR's ( rifles or carbines) during the past decade or longer... as an LE/FA instructor I ran qual's and a course of instruction for the "patrol rifle/carbine".....in this day and age, any agency that allows any type of firearm for duty use will require the officer to complete a course of instruction for that specific firearm and qualify periodically with that firearm.....to do otherwise will result in liability for the agency and officer in the event of litigation in a use of force issue.....We qual'ed with our M-4's and MP5's and when I was a "Marksman/Observer" equipped with a .308 bolt gun, I had to log monthly "cold bore" shots and recertify periodically by completing an FBI recertification course for "Marksman/Observers".....notice I am taking pains not to use the "S" word. Most agencies have very strict guidelines and written policies that govern the issue/carrying of firearms on duty, to operate outside of those policies and guidelines will mean that the officer is "no longer within the scope of his/her employment".

Wow.....really? I think I see waaaaay more civilians trying to be "pseudo SWAT members" than I see LEOs.

I don't know of a single agency that just hands out rifles. Of course everyone has to qualify with them....I can't imagine in this day and age an agency would just hand out a rifle to any officer without training. The legal liability a municipality would open itself up to would be unreal.

Speaking for my agency only, you have to ask then go through a training class to have a rifle. Then you go and qualify with it. Heck, you even have to ask to carry a shotgun.....of course you have to qualify with it.

I never thought I would see that type of attitude towards LE here of all places, and thank goodness it is only one member.

I don't think he meant "pseudo SWAT member" in a bad way, I think he's just referring to the number of agencies that carry patrol rifles. It really wasn't that long ago when only the very rural officers carried patrol rifles, or SWAT members. It has become nearly standard in this day and age for ALL patrol officers to carry and/or be issued rifles, almost as common as having a shotgun now. And I agree, everyone qualifies with a patrol rifle, just like every " tool" we carry. We must qualify and requalify with every weapon we carry, whether lethal or less than lethal, at least annually, as i'm sure others do as well. Patrol rifles are another byproduct of society today, much like OC spray, batons, and tasers, they have become necessary tools of the profession.

Cant afford to wait for SWAT anymore. It's the patrol officer/deputy that will take care of the situation, in the event a situation arises that requires the use of a rifle. Columbine.
