WVSP 4566TSW
I just wanted to share with everyone that I finally purchased one of these remarkable pistols. Unreal how great it feels in the hand. The level of fit and finish these guns exhibit is unbelievable. Date on the fired shell casing that was included with mine was 11-14-11. Gun is unfired since leaving the factory. Just goes to show that these guns can be produced if the manufacturer wants to produce them.

Guys I'm sorry if I came off as gloating. I'm just really excited. After my last thread about missing the one on auction, I was offered one for sale privately. I am assuming he only had the one.
I surf the forum by my phone, and it has never allowed me to post pictures. If someone would like a few pictures I could probably email them if you would like to post them.
18DAI, for what I gave for this thing, I REALLY wish that model 39 had turned out to be a steel frame. Lol!!!!

As long as you are happy with it, you didn't pay too much. At least thats what I tell myself when I look at all the S&W 3rd gen 45's I've purchased.
Let us know how it shoots. You are going to shoot it? Aren't you? Regards 18DAI

Congrats 517! While I have to admit I'm a little jealous here, I'm also happy to see you landed the big one!
Maybe you could send the photos to 18DAI and he could post them for you?

I thought about not shooting it...........for about 15 seconds!!!!!! Heck yes I'm going to shoot that thing!!!!!!! I thought about it and came to the conclusion that I'm just not that into safe queens. There are some guns I own that I haven't shot, but it is because I haven't had time to yet. Life is waaaaaaaaay to short to not shoot this great piece!!
You know, the date on the recovered casing shows 11-14-11. That tells me that they will produce them.....for the right price. For me the excuse that they just don't have the personnel or machinery to do it is a bunch of bull. They can....it just matters how much you want to pay to persuade them. Examining this gun makes me realize something else......they can truly put out a quality product when they want to. The quality of this pistol ranks right up there with anything else I've ever seen. Seriously. In fact, it might be one of the nicest auto pistols I've ever seen. I really mean that.
It is a shame that they have chosen a different path though.

Okay, I'll try to send you some pictures later on tonight. Have a busy day today and it will probably be late when I get home. If not tonight definitely by tomorrow morning.

It amazes me that while we drool over these guns, many of the troops they are issued to would just as soon have a Glock. I asked a troop a while back had he liked his and he said, "they're all pieces of junk!"

It's funny , I just got off the phone with my son who's a Ill State Trooper. I told him about my newest pistol buy ( a 4003tsw ) I think he said something about ancient weapons and hokey religions . He is so into the Glock .40s and has no use for any pistol with a hammer drop or manual safety to say nothing of the weight or the bore center. He even took the 1911 shot at me 'it's 100 years old and they still make them , do they still make 3rd gens? Boy, I guess we really are the crazy uncles locked in S&Ws closet . I guess I just can't break my 3rd gen addiction nor do I want to.

Beautiful pistol! Everything you need in a duty gun and nothing you don't.
As to the troops who would complain about the 4566TSW I have a couple of opinions based on my observations and experiences.
Many younger officers have little to no experience with guns, prior to becoming LE. Lets face it, our society today......and for the past decade or so, is largely "anti gun". Young folks are indoctrinated into "guns are bad".
Schools preach against guns. So do the liberals media lapdogs. Boy Scouts don't even teach marksmanship anymore. These younger guys come up with little exposure to firearms.
Then they get in the academy and have a Glock put in their hand. Their instructors extoll the virtues of the plastic wonder gun. They are also "aware" of Glocks from popular videos and movies. They are indoctrinated that their agency wants the best equipment for them. So, the Glock must be "best" or their agency wouldn't stick it in their holster. Right? And look at how many other agencies use Glocks.
They see TDA metal framed guns as antiquated, "heavy" and "hard to shoot well" because of that mythical "dreaded DA to SA transition". They probably have never shot metal framed guns, unless they have prior military service and even that is no guarantee of prior handgun training.
I know two rookies who are former US Army who never fired a handgun prior to becoming LE. Long guns yes. But no handguns. They love plastic striker fired guns. Neither has ever shot anything else. They have no practical experience with any other firearm other than what they were taught on at the academy. And they have no interest in firearms, shooting for fun, sport or in practicing to improve their skill set. They only shoot twice a year at qualifications and hope to score a 70. The bare minimum score to qualify and keep working on the street.
When they shoot with older guys who came up in a gun culture, have experience with many different handgun designs and platforms, have revolver experience, compete with handguns, have an interest in guns and shooting and carry metal framed hammer fired guns, these young Glock babies are largely outclassed.
We - the aforementioned dinosaurs carrying steel framed hammer fired guns - largely shoot expert or distinguished expert. We pick up the old copies of COMBAT HANDGUNS to read in the range house during breaks. We talk about guns and shooting. We have leather holsters and gunbelts. We likely smoke or use tobacco products too!
So, when some guy says that his melonited 4566TSW duty gun, even a current production example, is "junk", well...........I'll take that opinion with a large shaker of salt. Odds are, the same guy thinks the m&p is just a great pistol. He probably carries one of those panty shields off duty too. In 9mm. My 0.02 Regards 18DAI

Looks completely different from the normal 4566TSW. The rail looks integral to the lower part of the frame in the dust cover area, and the re is a molded serial number on the right side of the gun. Interesting and cool.

I also get a kick out of those guys that would call a 1911 or 4566 "junk".
I've seen more than a few guys quickly change their tune when they get one in their hands at a range.
Some of my LEO friends who used to have to carry Glocks now are issued SIGs. One department has .40's. the other one has the SIGs in .357 SIG. Now they all to a man think the Glocks are junk. Although fairly reliable junk, and love their metal SIGs. I've never understood how any real shooter could prefer a plastic framed, DAO striker gun to a metal gun with a hammer.
1911's are flying off the shelves at $1000 and up. A "4th Gen" scandium framed, compact DA/SA pistol would easily win multiple gun of the year awards and be in short supply. The problem is, S&W is already running production full out, and making record profits, so there is little incentive for them to introduce new products in the short-term.

First of all I want to say a big thanks to Grog for posting pictures for me. Thank you!!!
Again, I just can't stress the level of quality in the fit and finish of this gun. It is unbelievable. Seriously some of the best. Better than the other 4566TSW in the pictures with it. Goes to show S&W can crank out a world beater IF IT WANTS TO. This gun feels unreal in the hand.
Noticed a few differences. Serial number on opposite side from normal. Small cut out at the bottom of the front strap. Decock only, yet has the red safety dot. Picatinny rail instead of universal rail. Front strap checkering is almost perfect.
I would kill for this thing to be wearing a Melonite 4506 slide and barrel. It would be my dream gun.

456517, let me start by saying what a great gun and a shame we can't go to the LGS and buy 1. I do have a 4566tsw so I'm not in total envy. When they say there is no market these guns I wonder who is running these company's and what are they thinking. To keep the tread going here's a few pics of 1 of my other all steel TDA .45s.

Out of sheer coincidance,I ran into a 4566 in a gun shop today. It was a later one with MIM Hammer and trigger and laser etching instead of roll marks, and decocker only. It had a laser etched message on the right side of the slide which said something to the effect of "decocker lever will return to fire position when released". It also was not a TSW, did not have the rail. Was in nice shape, what do you think something like this is worth? And is it possible to change it from decocker only back to a safety/decocker?

You can have it converted. However, decock only 4566s were the exception not the norm. Probably a special order or contract over run. Personally I like the decock only better. I have a 4006TSW that is decock only and I love it. Also have a 1006 without mag disconnect. Has the writing on the side "Will fire with mag removed". I wouldn't pay a premium for that particular 4566, but I would still purchase it.

About two years ago cheaper than dirt guns in McKinney Texas had some of the 4566 decock only melonite finish for $619 new. As has been said, probably an over run for someone

Bumping an old post. These are all on photobucket, so if anyone wants to save them, do so before they end up getting nuked (as is happening to many of their accounts).

It really is cool to see this gun sitting with the two CHP 4006 TSWs I just purchased.
The hit and miss nature of S & W manufacturing these coupled with my experience with the M & P as a duty weapon really has turned me off from current S & W production.
I used to laugh at the guys that said "I only buy old S & Ws".......yet here I am saying the same thing.
I'm glad I could provide everyone with the pictures. It's nice to share something that benefits the community.

I learned the other day that WV PSC Transportation Enforcement Officers, the guys that deal with 18 wheelers, are carrying melonite 4566's as well. I was totally unaware of that as I rarely have any contact with them. Also, the WVSP is in the midst of selecting a new, most likely polymer 9mm service pistol and the PSC will follow suit.
Sad the see the 3rd gens finally going away after a long and very successful history in WV. However, the silver lining is that we may finally be seeing a bunch of melonite, integral rail 4566's on the market.
S&W will never do it, but I still think limited runs of these guns, priced similarly to Sigs would sell like hot cakes.

Happy for you. I have a number of generation 3 pistols, but would not be interested in any double action only.

The Melonite WVSP 4566TSWs are TDA. Not DAO. They have spurless hammers. Regards 18DAI

I sold you that 4006TSW back in 2011. I still have the PM's back and forth in my inbox here. That gun was originally a safety/decock config. There was a guy on this board who was a rep for S&W who offered to have the gun converted to decock only for me. I sent him the gun and he had it converted and sent it back. Glad she's still going strong.
My only 3rd Gens currently are a 4566TSW with the black rail and a 5906 I've owned since I bought it new in 1994. Love me some 3rd Get S&W Autos.

DUDE!!!!
I have looked for you since you sold me that jewel back then! I was worried that you weren't on the board anymore!
I hope all is well with you. That gun is still going strong. More admired than shot these days (job takes up sooo much time), but every time I take it out and handle it, I am always amazed at the great condition it is in. It is truly a jewel.
Great to hear from you. Hope all is well and hope to see you more often on the board.

Nope, you're not alone.
Photo bucket and some of the other photohosting sites have changed their policies recently to a paid subscription model. If you don't sign up for a monthly charge you can't link those photos anymore on other sites.
My understanding is that the photos are still there for users to download - but you can't link them to here without paying up.

Photobucket cut off third party hosting for people who won't pay their exorbitant fees a few weeks ago. A lot of people have moved their pictures to other services, but some haven't caught up yet. That's why you're seeing that message and not the pictures.

Haven't been back in a while. I uploaded them for the fellow and see the water marked versions now.
I'll see if I still have them in an email and see if I can host better versions.

Congrats on a fine pistol!!! I would think that more of these will start popping up soon. WVSP went Gen 5 Glock 9mm starting in late summer. I'd think by now the transition is complete.

Dang! That is sure a beautiful .45 you’ve got coming. I’m green with envy. Trust you’ll be sure to tell us more when you receive it and try it out. Congratulations on that one.

What a blast from the past.
I can't understate just how fine a build quality these guns exude. Easily on a par with the best out there.
S & W can make a darn fine handgun when they want to.

I had an ex Kentucky State Trooper offer up this KSP 4566 TSW and a 66-1 2.75" close to the first of this year, and I couldn't pass up either one. He thought there were only about 25 of the 4566 TSW's produced, for testing purposes. I have not been able to confirm or dispute the claim.
These were built without a rail, and no holes in the frame, and I got the box, paperwork & 3 mags with it, of which only one shows signs of use. Believe or not, it's packed and ready for it's first range trip (be me) for tomorrow. What a surprise to see the 2013 WVSP thread revived this evening. I'm not so sure that I don't like the looks of the OP's black one better.
It's a great match with my 4516 ND, so now I need a 4506 to go with these. Mine is built extremely well too. The political climate back around 2003 here in Ky (and who knows what other incentive) led to these 4566 TSW's being rejected in favor of a Glock I hear. ............. mercy.........
I'd be interested to know how many are out there, and I'd like to get my hands on one of those WVSP TSW's as well. It's great looking pistol for sure. I do believe they would still sell today, but who knows what they would cost.
(Sorry, I can't seem to adjust the brightness & color on this new phone!
Yet.) Grrrrr!
