Model 59 Purchased Today
For those of you that don't read the revolver section that is where i am usually at as this is my first auto. To back up a bit I purchased three guns a month or so ago from a grandson who got his grandfathers collection. Mostly Smith & Wesson revolvers. I bought a 29-2 in 6 1/2", 66-1 in 6" and a 48 in 8 3/8". I wanted more if possible and it worked out. I picked up a 27-2 in 6 1/2" and a 25-2 in 6". now on to the Model 59.
I asked the question here about these guns and learned some usefull information. It is absolutely mint in the original box with all the docs. I love guns with all the goodies. I will most likely shoot this gun as they don't seem to be highly prized as a collectable. Brian

Nice purchase. I found a 39-2 a few weeks back with all the same goodies for $300. Everytime I see a thread titled "What's the best value", etc., I immediately think of all the 1st-3rd gen Smiths floating out there. It seems as though with all the new-fangled autos on the market, alot of small stores don't know what to price them at, so out comes the blue book.
Or maybe I just over-value them!

Congratulations. You seem to have found yourself a little treasure trove of goodies!
I'm envious! Your Md 59 is exactly what I am looking for. An early new or almost new with all the stuff.

Congrats on the great find, got mine barely used in 1980 and still in the range bag everytime I go. Hope you get as much enjoyment shooting the first gen "wonder nine" as I have.

Nice score! I have a nice one too and love the trigger. I put a couple of white dots on the rear sight and painted in a small, red ramp on the front sight. Much better now. That is the only drawback, in my opinion. The sights leave much to be desired.

I picked up a couple boxes of 115 gr. fmj that happened to be on the shelf. I don't know when I will get to the range but at least I have some ammunition.
It came with one extra magazine. Are they still available for sale? Brian

Sold my 59 but picked up a NIB MDL 639 last winter. Magazines around, more than the ones for a 39. I consider the 39 one of the most beatuiful guns Smith ever made. JMHO of course.

Thanks. Did you get the MGSW5915 or what they call the standard 15 round magazine? Brian

Any of the S&W 59 series mags should work in your 59, as well as the Mec-Gars. S&W still makes them and their available online, check out CDNN they have mags on sale from time to time too. Dale

That's a nice one. I'm a revolver guy and I haven't found a semi that I couldn't possibly live without yet. If I found something like that, it'd probably come home with me.

I hear you. I am a revolver guy big time but this classic Model 59 really looked and felt nice in my hand. I have no interest at all in plastic guns. Just not my style. The only other auto on my someday list is a Gold Cup.

Nice pistol - the 59- I was issued a model 59 when I started my career in law enforcement in 1974. Carried it for 13 years and never, never had a problem. Then in 1987, I was issued a 659, I love S & W, but this was the low point IMHO of their production. the 659 was AWFUL. Subsequent to that I was issued two weapons the 4563TSW for street carry and the 4013 for plain clothes again back to both being wonderful. We would have stayed with the Smith's but late in the 2000 decade we were do to another new weapon issue and Smith had stopped making the 3rd Generations. So we went with the Glock "0h well".
We were allowed to purchase throughout the years, the old models when new ones were issued. All except the 659 followed me home and continue to be used often. The 59 is the prize of the bunch, not in money, but in value to me. probably over 25,000 rounds through it. only had to replace the recoil spring once. I did finally shear the safety (yes it is not a DECOCKER) about a month ago and replaced that very quickly.
All great guns and probably the best value for the money of any semi-auto out there. And this is coming from the point of view of someone who owns multiples of Sig, Walther, HK, Colt, Ed Brown, Wilson, High Standard, Seecamp, and Smith .
Shoot that 59 and enjoy. You have one of the finest handguns out there!!!
