Very interesting thread, I had no idea there were so many funky/cool 3rd gen variants built. Makes my humble stash of 'regular' 3rd gen's seem...........humble.

Default Picking the top 5 ???? Good luck

Good luck picking 5 .......

Here are a few favs that I've had the privilege to own (most still grace my safe)

PC 40 Limited.

M1086 that I had made up to look like the 3566 models.... i.e., black phosphate finish and polished stainless accents....

M4556 and Shorty 45

M457D Chicago PD production - DAO Value Series 45 ACP

M5906 Modelo Militar Model

M4054 - fairly scarce/limited production

M4056 TSW - All steel compact auto, one of my favs....

M39 Steel frame (with Military magazine... )

Another shot of my M4556 autos

One of a kind PC 40 Limited built as DAO

M4546 DAO.. too cool to describe...

Custom long slide M6906...

Six inch PPC9 in DAO configuration

M3954 - What's not to like????

M5944 - another scarce unit

M5946 SSV (Short Slide Variation)

M4586 - One of my all-time favorite variations - one of the pair that I consider my "go-to" autos:

M5946 - One of six made in this configuration (or was it 5??? )

Additional (gratuitous) pic of three of the above

Another

Wow, thanks everyone. Finding out that a few of mine, (that I didn't really care about that much,) are on someones want list, makes me appreciate them again. My LNIB 3904 with Novak sights was on my "get rid of" list. Guess I won't.

Geesus Christmas!!! I guess so!!!

Every one of the 3rd Gens I've been able to score so far are "Plain Jane" standard catalog guns. Every last one! What am I doing wrong?
  • Not a single PC gun so far.
  • Not a single TSW gun so far.
  • Not a single cop special order gun so far.
  • Not a single distributor special so far.
  • Not a single 10mm gun so far.
  • Not even a .22LR 3rd Gen so far.
I could pull the Massachusetts "no imports" card I suppose as my excuse. Or the "poor old retired man living in poverty" card? Or both???

Oh well. I'm still having fun. That's what matters.

Always love it when Smithnut shows up........ as TTSH said ...."humbling".

I've been accumulating 3rd Gen Smith's since 1989/90 .... starting with a transitional 6906.....long gone.... for a round trigger guard 6906 with Novack's.

My first PC gun was a SD-9; an all steel gun, with a 4 1/4" slide/barrel on a steel 6906 frame. Being all steel this gun is like shooting a 9mm......that feels like a .22. But it's a bit heavy for everyday carry.

The SD-9 was soon followed by a unmarked "Shorty 9".... which became my hi-cap carry gun. Hey back in the day; who knew that PC guns were going to be in such short supply 20 years later... kind of like Registered Magnums in 1938..... you could buy all you wanted or could afford at $60 a pop.

Last year for "s____ts and giggles" and because of the bad influence of GunHobbit...... I built a Frankinsmith....... a matt silver Cerecoated (sp?) 6904 frame with a 915 upper....... giving me a alloy frame, reverse two-tone, 690X with a 4 inch barrel/slide.

This combo has really grown on me as a hi-cap carry gun..... carried inside waist band..... the extra 1/2 inch of barrel tucks away nicely.... but gives a bit of extra sight radius and maybe an extra 50-70 FPS.....and is still relatively light and well balanced in the hand.

Would love to see the PC build this gun on a 6906 frame w/ a 5904 Novak night-sight upper............... w/ a full hammer.

To OP's original question........ my everyday carry are a 3913NL; backed up in cooler months by a 3914......... so:

I would love to find a 3914NL..... for a "salt and pepper" / "summer/winter" set of carry guns.

Call me an old curmudgeon but if the designation of the S&W pistol has more than three numbers in it, I'm not the least bit interested in it!

The only "high numbered" S&Ws I have are a 629 and 659. The rest of them have two digits, i.e. 10, 66, 27, 39, 60, 64, 52, etc.

Real "Old Curmudgeon's" guns don't have any numbers just names!

Well, at least you've got a 2nd Gen Model 659... ... which, as a mainly 3rd Gen collector, I consider a very cool gun except for the silly large Philips head screw holding on the right safety lever. I hope you have replaced that ugly thing.

A favorite LGS just got in a used Model 639 which I would love to go see and buy if it is in really, really good shape. Unfortunately, the relatively low asking price probably suggests otherwise but I could be wrong. It might just be priced low for a quick sale.

Unless I missed it I didn't see a Model 4026 listed among the "unicorns" or rare 3rd generation semi-autos . . . even among those at the smithnut unicorn ranch . . . so am including a picture of one to make the list complete.

Of course the frame-mounted de-cocking lever is among its distinguishing features.

I would love to own what I do not currently have which are a 5906- damn I hate the adjustable sights in this one, a 6904, a 4566tsw, and a 4516-1.

I would, love to find another of my first carry gun, a 4006 MA trooper gun again. That and performance center guns, frame mounted de cocker models, and a FBI 1076. Another I let get away years ago.

Love this thread! This is my first year of looking for S&W Semi-autos. Now own a:
3906, 4006, 5906, 5946 and a 39-2. My wish list keeps changing as I read such posts. But certainly a 45 and a 10mm if a good gun/good price come along. Thanks for sharing this info/pics.

dawggunner, if you did not already happen to know...

All of the pistols you've listed are great ones but the 3906 is the hardest to find of those. Make sure you hold on to that one. I would love to have one but I haven't gotten lucky quite yet.

My 2 90-95% 457's just because most I see have visible finish wear. Own a 3906 adjustable sights would say it's a solid 90%. Also my 909 since I don't see too many of them up for sale.

My current "most scarce" is my KSP 4566TSW, that was never issued. The 4566 was up to replace the KSP 1076 (own one of those too) and the political winds blew a Glock in to take it's place. This particular 4566TSW (no rail) was as a KSP designated firearm, but it never served. So I think both of those are somewhat rare.

I used to own a 3906 and a 4040PD, both somewhat difficult to find, but not as scarce I suppose. Love to find a 3914NL someday, when I still have "gun money" in my pocket. And I wish I had the 4040PD back in the safe.

Very enjoyable thread.

Of the top 5 I own, might have to start off with my four 1046's and the 1013 conversion, or my 5 FBI lettered 1076's. I think I have 28 S&W 10mm's
