Barrel movement with slide forward.
On one of my third generation S&W pistols I can press down on the hood of the barrel, with the slide fully forward and locked up, and it will drop about 1/8". When the barrel is pressed down, the slide will move rearward slightly. If I hold the slide tight, the barrel can't be pressed down. This gun has only been fired about 200 rounds, and shows no wear. None of my other S&W pistol barrels will move with the slide forward and locked up. Is this normal with some third generation pistols?

Mine does it as well and shoots/functions just fine... I think you pushing on the barrel and moving the slide is simulating enough of the beginning stages of recoil that you're beginning to unlock the gun.
Nothing to worry about it seems to me.

I checked my 6906 & it doesn't do what your describing. I don't know what might cause it.

That much barrel movement does not sound right. How worn is your frame? What round count is on that 6906, if you know? Any pics of the barrel and frame?
I've owned three 6906's over the years. The barrels did not move at all when the guns were in battery. I would suspect excessive wear to be allowing barrel movement as you describe. I hope I'm wrong too!
Hopefully Fastbolt will be along to assist you. Good luck! Regards 18DAI

I bought the gun used but unfired with no signs of use. Since buying the gun It has only been to the range one time. A little less than 200 rounds fired with no problems.

I just re-read your original post. If you hold the slide in place the barrel doesn't move. But pressing the barrel causes the slide to travel back. Strange.
I don't have any 9mm's available to try what you describe. But I just tried to do that with my 4513TSW. The barrel didn't move and I didn't need to hold the slide in place.
Maybe the recoil spring and/or hammer spring in your 6906 needs replacing. I don't think the slide should be able to move simply by pushing down on the barrel hood.
But hopefully Fastbolt or CALREB will be along shortly to assist you. Regards 18DAI

A 6906 (and I'm looking at one right now) shouldn't have any barrel movement in the vertical axis until it unlocks. This is true for any Browning/Colt tilt barrel design.
In the '06, unlocking shouldn't occur until the slide has moved backwards about 3/16 of an inch. This amount is approximately the distance from the front of the slide to the front of the frame. What you describe sounds very unsafe. Were it my gun, I'd get it checked by a competent gunsmith before firing.
There may be some build-up either in the diagonal projections on the side of the barrel feed ramp or the matching cam surfaces in the slide. Or worse, a badly fitting slide stop.
As an aside, I always thought it was odd that the S&W engineers went to this sort of unlocking mechanism. Where Colt uses a swinging link (does that sound pornographic?) and Browning along with a host of others a kidney-shaped cut out under the barrel, Smith & Wesson's solution is more akin to the Webley&Scott pistol self-loading .455” design.

I made a call to S&W CS. They told me that it was normal on some guns. The gun shoots fine, and I like the 6906, but the barrel movement bothers me. There is a local dealer/gunsmith that I will probably show it to and see what he will give me for it. Will search for another 6906 or 5906 in excellent condition.

How old is the recoil spring?
It might be just weak enough where it allows movement under the deliberate downward pressure of your finger, but still strong enough to make one think that the slide is being sufficiently held forward because of the amount of felt resistance when the slide is pulled back.

It has the original recoil spring. As far as I know, I am the the only one that has shot the gun since it left the factory. One time to the range with a little less than 200 rounds fired. Weak spring does make sense. Just tried putting some forward pressure on the slide, and the barrel is tight!
