There were not many 4014s.

Most folks of that era preferred stainless.

At the end of last the year I picked up a clean 4014 (no box) with 4 mags for $375. Now this was a VERY good deal.

Yours should easily bring in at least $500

+1 to the above, and I would add that depending on condition, and whether box, papers, etc. come with it (as original), collectors would especially be interested in this rare-as-hen's-teeth pistol. I gather from having read comments here on the Forum in the past that these are Grail guns for 3rd Gen. collectors.

A member on here posted recently that only 550 were made.

Another member purchased one from GB for $375 with two mags, and got an excellent deal on it after another member posted its availability shortly before the auction was over. (Forum members helping Forum members....Gotta love it!)

Price? Difficult to determine, due to its rarity. If it were mine, I would want to offer it here to "keep it in the family" and the fact that folks here know what it is. On the other hand, the auctions are well attended by Forum members too.

My guess is that it could easily go in the $500+ range if it is complete with box, etc and is in excellent condition. It's a nice find for someone, as well as a very nice carry weapon as well.

I bought mine this year with no box and one mag for $400 from a local shop. They are rare, but from what I can tell, with S&W gen 3 autos, rare doesn't always = valuable. Now, as most of us know there were only 550 of them made, but we know that because a forum member posted the factory letter for one:
What is the value? S&W 4014

Is that information common knowledge to the buying public at large? Is that info known by those who set the prices in the pricing guides? If not than they will 'book' for much less than they should.

I have one. I bought it LNIB with both original mags for $385 just about two years ago. I thought that was a very good deal.

I helped another guy find and buy one; and one sold at Fin Feather & Fur here in Ashland, OH about a year ago (to a member here) for under $400 (great condition, no box or accessories); and I was the guys that alerted the group that was selling on an auction site earlier in the year- which a S-W Forum member then bought. One just sat on another auction site last week un-sold as nobody bid on it. I was going to buy it but ended up traveling and missed the close of the auction. I believe it could have been had for $400.

Mine is my EDC for the last 2 years. When I bought it, it had about 50 rounds through it. I love it, and while it is relatively "rare" (I have a copy of the letter too), I don't think it will ever be a Colt Python kind of collector price-wise. So I carry it daily and shoot it once every couple of weeks. (I shoot others more frequently).

Should the finish ever get to the point where it bothers me- I'll send it to S&W. Mine still looks great. I believe this gun if ever refinished is a great candidate for a S&W Melonite treatment on the slide.

I think NIB models with a pristine box are going to be in the $550-$650 range. Mint or LNIB probably $385 (stupid, but true) to $550. Even though a few of us love blued guns (or "blackened" as it were) and only 550 or so were made, a lot of 4013's were made. (And 3913's).

If you ever want to sell yours - let me or one of the other guys know. I'd like to buy one for my son who loves mine.

By the way, and I've posted this before- mine rides in a custom IWB leather holster made by Tim Thurner of TT Gunleather. He has the blank for a 4013/4014.

It's probably the nicest holster I've ever owned or used, and is about half the price of other top end holster like the Sparks, Rosens, etc., which are indeed awesome holsters- but are fairly expensive and have long lead times. Tim is also a very nice guy to work with.

The thing about black alloy frame 3rd Gens is that they show every nick and scratch. That's why (JMHO) when you find one that looks like new, you have something special. So, for those that have one of the 550 black 4014 pistols in like new condition, I think you have something very special. The one I found five or so years ago is not going to leave my collection.

To the original poster: Unless you really need the money, I would keep that 4014 (again, JMHO). If you can find a nice 4013 to go with it, they add new flavor to Salt & Pepper.

Red face

I paid $500 NIB 11/2 yrs ago. Shot 2-3 mags thru it. Nice gun and goes with my 4053 (Single stack) and my 4536. All compacts, each has its own personality. I wouldn't sell it for $550.

That's a great looking 4014, and a great I idea . . . to not sell it.
