Default WHAT CARRY SEMI AUTO ?

Trying to decide without trying out tons of guns, because there aren't any in stock anywhere to try out, feel in the hand. What do Ya'll consider the best 4-5 in Carry pistols under 800 bucks in 45ACP? Thanks for any ideas, input, suggestions. I have large hands. My M&P 45 fits my hand great with the medium thickness grip. If that helps.

4513TSW. Can be had like new in box for less than $800. 3.75 barrel. Accurate, reliable and looks good doing all that. Thinner than the m&p. Conceals easily.

Buy it, shoot it, love it. Good luck! Regards 18DAI

Well, you already own one, and the other would be an XDm.

If you can find a CS-45 that will surely work.

Well, now that I think about it, if you have large hands it might not....

That's a tuff one everyone has an opinion Glock 30S is my choice. The full size 21 feels better if you have a big hand. I hate Tupperware!

Do you want DAO or traditional DA/SA? Metal frame or polymer? Are you looking more for a "pocket size" or larger? There are as many questions as answers. All we can do is make suggestions. There have been some really good suggestions so far.

Personally I prefer larger size autos. That's just me. I make no bones about the fact that the 4506 is my all time favorite. I find it to be extremely versatile. However, it may not be for you. The 4566 is another favorite of mine. For DAO I really enjoy my 4586. I have no experience with the 4516 but many knowledgeable folks here recommended them.

I also like my Glocks. I own several. I carry my 21 concealed as well as my 36. A very solid product and extremely reliable, which is what you want in a self defense gun.

You can't go wrong with any of the guns suggested. In my mind the only wrong choice would be with an M & P, but that's based on my personal experiences with them. I cannot under any circumstances recommended them.

I bought a 4513TSW largely based upon the recommendations of this board and have been extremely pleased with it. They're not "tactical" like a Glock 30s/sf but for me it's a great .45 ACP package that I really like.

My favorite concealed carry .45ACP is my Kahr P45.
Lightweight, compact with a grip that fits just right.
6+1 shot.
My other concealed carry .45ACP is a HK 45C but I prefer the Kahr.

As the proud owner of a pair of XXL hands I find many of the compacts rather uncomfortable. I simply prefer to have all my fingers on the frontstrap. Never liked dangling the pinky under the magazine.

I'm not a big fan of plastic guns either. That being said however, If there were ever some horrific event which forced me into one as and EDC, I'd have to go with a G36 + a pearce grip extension.

Fortunately I have a small gathering of S&W's 3rd generation semi autos here that accommodate my XXL mitts just fine. Those being 4516, 4566TSW & 4513PC. These are all 7 or 8 round grip frames and permit me a full purchase on the grip without any dangling digits.

I know many folks here are quite fond of the early 4513TSW with the 6 shot grip frame. And this is personal preference only, but I just find the 6 shot grips bit too short for me. Same goes for the CS45. Nonetheless I still want to add a nice CS45 to my herd eventually.

In any event, with your big hands I think you would be well served by any of the compact 45s with the 7 shot frame. These would include the late model 4513TSW, 4516, 4513PC aka Shorty 45, and the value line 457 series. Or even the 8 shot frames like 4566, 4566TSW, & 4563TSW

For what it's worth, the two guns that ride my belt the most are my 4516 and my 4566TSW (no rail). The purchase cost of these two combined was $849. So there are some decent deals to be had out there just gotta be patient, haunt the auction sites and the forum classifieds.

Cheers
Bill

45 under $800 is a very broad question. Like asking what kind of jeans as long as they are blue.

Glock20
M&P
S&W 4506/4566/4583
Any of the following police trades: Sig220, HK USP45, Glock20, Ruger P945,

Basically just about any used 45 and some new ones

Talking Couple others

All the suggestions are ones I would agree with.

If you go with the 457 series, you could also get the stainless--457s.

Have you thought about a S&W 1911? I have the 1911 pd--scandium frame, 8 rounds....

The 4513 mentioned earlier comes in a 7 round mag (no cut) frame or a "cut" out frame for a 6 round magazine. Experts agree the 7 round frame is more MANLY!! (Tweeking ya boys)

Best carry pistols in .45 ACP? I will list 5 that are known to be good, but will exclude certain good ones not presently made.

In no particular order:

S&W M&P
HK45 Compact
Colt 1911 or Commander (not any variation with under 4 1/4 inch barrel)
Glock 30S
SIG 220

My primary carry weapon is an ATI tactical titan 1911 in 45 acp. But in a pinch I also carry one of my full size 1911's.

Regretted trading my CS45, but got a sweet 327TR8PC in return and was wanting to have just DAO as my carry guns. So now I finally am able to redeem myself by winning a GB auction on a LNIB 4553TSW no rail.

I like my 4513TSW and my CS45. The 4506 is a little big to carry all day. You need to find some and see what feels good in your hand. Then try to find some that you can shoot before you buy. There are a lot of good 45s for under $800. There a few 457's available for under $500.

This will sound like sacrilege but my carry handgun is a SIG220. I do not like the newer generation of hammer-less, striker fired, single action handguns. You can always give the round a second strike but not with the SA autos. I'm sure there are many who will disagree but that is why there are so many different types and styles of handguns out there - to get one which suits you.

I have an older West German Sig P220. It can carry well in the right holster, is not too big or heavy, and shoots great. Mine has been 100% reliable. They can be had for well under $800. Even the most hardcore S&W guy would have to admit they are excellent guns. Good luck.

I am still having a hard time deciding on revolver without a hammer like the S&W 38 bodyguard for pocket carry or the semi auto bodyguard by smith, a snub 686. Anyone have experience with these? Now to look at the p220 sig I just want something that feels good in my hand and safe in a pocket as to not shot myself in the leg.

Not sacrilege at all, they're excellent guns. AND you can walk into any gun store and order one, try doing that with a 3rd Gen Smith.

My SIG 220 is the standard model, made in W. Germany. I've had it a long time as it was bought when SIG introduced the 220 and the standard model was only one available. In fact I like it so much more that I bought two more! I have one for concealed carry, one for the bedroom and one in my work truck. They all have been 100% reliable.

The reason I like it so well, is the you are in control of it. You can cock or de-cock the hammer, shoot single or double action, drop the hammer on a load chamber, etc. These features are not available on the newer handguns. To me, removing these features make me think the manufacturers consider the shooters too "stupid" to be trusted with these additional features. Just my $0.02.

The DAK model Sig (I carry a 229R in this flavor for work) is essentially just an update to the old double action trigger. The trigger both cocks and drops the hammer every time pulled. The update is that there are two (regardless of what Sig wants to say about it) reset points. The initial trigger pull is about 6/7 lbs and then the first reset is about 9 lbs or you can continue all the way back out and it goes back to 6/7.
