Default Turning myself in for robbery...

So I stopped at one of my LGS's last night,,, poked around the gun cases just killing time. I actually stopped in to set up an appointment for the bosses 350Z to get some updated brakes, but gotta poke around the store... See lots of neat shotguns, a half dozen Beretta Storm carbines, couple of M&P AR-10's... M1 carbines, AK's... nice prices I'm thinking, but I got em all already... so I'm looking at the handguns.... just kinda scanning, not really looking for anything in particular, I have most all the handguns, pistols and revolvers I want ...... then I notice a couple of 1911's, the E series with the bobbed grip catches my eye first, got one recently at a good price so I just peak at the tag.... not bad, then I notice a 3" Pro series next to it for the typical $1050 price tag......

Then, I see it... a 3" 1911 Lew Horton Pro Series 2-tone.... I love that model, bought one soon after seeing one last year, it's a beauty. So I peak at the tag attached to it and thought it said $650....... I double take it, rub my eyes, get on my knee to get a closer look and to my amazement, it does indeed say 650.... I take a quick look around as I know something has to be wrong.... is this a setup, a mistake...... am I missing something, more importantly, what's wrong with this gun, surely it is missing something or broken..... Well I read the rest of the tag, it says used, box and 2 mags included...

Ok, I'm on guard, I look for a clerk, get his attention and have him pull the gun out of the case. I'm watching his eyes closely as he picks it up to see if he changes his expression... nope nothing, hands me the gun. So I'm checking it out, asking the usual questions, he answers with, yes, it's used, took it in last night, bought it from a customer, has the original box and 2 mags... I can't believe it, I'm trying to be calm, not saying anything about the price tag... my mind is just swirling, what should I do, can't afford it, don't need it, already have one, in fact have about 10 S&W 1911's in all kinds of configs.... Screw it, I can't walk away, I'll take it I tell him.

So as we walk to the other end of the counter, I'm thinking, ok, how do I pay for it, got a few hundred in my pocket, usually don't carry my CC cards anymore.... I could put it on layaway.... but then, no, can't do that... when I see a great deal, I have learned to close it on the spot and go... I know this is a long story..... but I am still amazed... waiting for a phone call saying there was a mistake, or a knock at the door with a police officer standing there... In the end, I said put it on layaway, I'll come back today with cash... 1 minute later, I reverted back to "close the deal on the spot and get out"... so I was out of there in 10 minutes with an almost like new in the box S&W 1911 Lew Horton 3" Pro Series!!!!

A $1200 gun for $655 out the door.... OH ya, with tax it should have been around $700... but the clerk sees my name on the computer and I get a "preferred customer" discount... Honest to God..... I felt guilty as sin buying this gun... I knew that at any minute, the clerk was going to suddenly tell me..... wait a minute, there's been a mistake....

Well ya..... so the boss lady owns a 350Z, her mother, the Big Boss Lady owns a new vette.... so since my business involves building turbo charged street cars.... along with all kinds of custom upgrades, she wanted her Z to have some kewl looking brake rotors that would be seen between the spokes... I guess... orrrrr... she thought she would do a little biz with me... and I would do a little biz with her...

I'm glad to see someone still working on 3.8L Buick V6s. They were about the best engine GM offered as far as having adequate power in stock form, not breaking often and delivering 30+ MPG highway from a luxury car in the mid-1980s, before such fuel economy was ever heard of except from econoboxes. Modified, I know they run well and live if the bottom end is strengthened.

Oh - nice gun, too!

hehehe, ya, it was a test and tune or qualifying run so no need to race each other, leave at will after the green... The white car was actually T&T, he was attempting to get his car into the 9's that day.... he was running 10.000. Unfortunately a week or 2 later, his car was stolen, not to be found up to now..

I don't remember seeing that there last week.

And I thought I did OK picking up an early JRD prefix Billboard S&W 1911 for $550. Needed refinishing, but looks good now.

As for the Pro, he said he just took it in tues night.. I have one of the 945 billboard 5" 1911's to go with my 3" 945.. can't remember if my SC 4" has the billboard.. I think it does, seems to me the first letter of the vin is a JR something.

No worries. Nobody has had a heck of a lot of info on the subject.

I do happen to have quite a bit of 9mm and .223 handy, so if you know a guy who knows a guy... Maybe a trade can be arranged.

I'm done cleaning up my billboard stainless for the moment. Came out good. I'll post pics of it on the other website, and maybe here.

Nice story.

It reminds me of the time I snagged a Sig P226 for $450.00 .I walked out half expecting some guys with black jackets to pop out the bushes for a chat.

Still a really nice score on a really nice pistol.

That's the thing about this place... Prices overall are reasonable, but sometimes these ridiculous deals pop up for used guns. I've personally bought a 642 with Crimson Trace grips for $425, and a model 66 for $325.

Well worth dropping by from time to time.

No kidding Mike, I have absolutely scored some good deals there... I really don't get the few that slam the place... the pricing on new guns seems reasonable compared to anywhere else.. I guess some guys can't let go of Phil or the guys that have not even been there that complain really kill me. Did you see Jason and Tim working there now from the closed S&W Retail Sporting Center and Range..

Cleaning up after Bubba

And if you're going to come down, now is as good a time as any... Oktoberfest is the best food all year, IMO.

turbo....I was browsing some old threads and when I seen your engine it brought a grin to my face...because I went with a friend of mine who was racing his car at Bristol Tenn. in 86 or 87 and Buddy Ingersoll was racing his 226 in. twin turbo against all the other PS guys who in IHRA could run 600+ cu engines....he just barely lost to Bob Glidden in the final round.....after that Ihra banned him because Ford raised you know what...and the NHRA wouldn't let him race either.....man that little Buick would fly

Yes sir, those were the facts!!!! I've raced some events against BB nitrous cars.... I'll just say... a lot of them went home early... and they were not happy. It's like what do you tell all your buds .... I got beat by a 6cyl... my car is actually a single turbo.. the motor in the picture is one of my customers from New Rochelle, NY..

And for the record, I raced at Bristol several times... at both the old and then new track....what an amazing place.

Default GOOD BUY

Great timing, I'm sure the price tag would have been re-marked sooner than later. Don't worry too much about the lgs, you don't know how much they paid for it & they normally don't sell guns for a loss.

Those Grand National engines could scoot quite well for sure. Myself I run small block Chevies all done up. Any 1/4 mile racing is great.
