My brother is looking for a new 45 and asked me do some research for him
What kind of accuracy is a SW1911 capable of at 25 yards using tailored handloads? He is trying to find a reasonable compromise between $$$ and a pistol that is capable of 2 - 2.5 inches or better at 25 yards.

My baseline for assured accuracy without another $150 gunsmithing is the STI Spartan at $750. It comes set up with FO front sight, ready to go for CDP or Single stack.

My current .45 is the S&W Pro 1911 .45, which also comes set up for competition and is capable of possibles on a 25yd bullseye target.

There are 2 schools of though on 1911s, and some people want to buy the cheapest basic gun around and then spend time and $$ modifying it. I'm the "buy what you really want and try to wear it out, send it back if it breaks" type. S&W has one dandy fine warranty.

I recently traded a 19-4 for a SW1911 and it easily groups 2" and under with everything I've fed it including cast bullet handloads!

Most new 1911s will be very accurate. Part of that is in its design. The other part is in the individual gun and ammo. The more expensive the 1911, generally the more accurate it will be. However, I have owned 3 different 1911s and neither was better than the other in the accuracy dpt. The guns were....Citadel, SA GI stainless and a Norinco. The ammo used was PMC, Wolf, PPU.

I suggested he purchase a Les Baer Premier ll for about $1,800 and be done with it but he wants to stay cheaper. Oh well.

Both of my S&W 1911's are more accurate than most shooters. A person would have to be exceptional to take advantage of any accuracy gained by the higher priced 1911's. I'm not doubting that $$ can buy you a bit more but it is a small percentage of us who can demonstrate it.

I thought my SW1911 was at best a 2" @ 25 yard shooter (given a steady rest)...until a fellow who shot bullseye competitively shot a mag through it and left one ragged sub-2" hole at 25 yards. Offhand. With Wally-world Winchester White Box hardball. Now, I am not sure about the SW1911, but am pretty sure I am a 2" @ 25 yard shooter (given a steady rest).

Thanks for that post...my point exactly! As much as we all love our sport we are still amateurs and aren't as accurate as our guns.

I've shot ragged holes with many different guns...ie revolvers, semi- autos and rifles. I've been shooting for better than five decades. I am not a competition shooter. I just love my hobby of collecting and shooting!
It all depends on the shooter and his/her experience.

My "Billboard" 1911 is a superb piece of craftsmanship and not only reliable with all ammo but I know it can do better than me but, I ain't complaining.

I've had 7 different S&W 1911's and still have 4 favorites. All of them would shoot better out of the box than most folks are capable of holding .
To me , there is no better bang for the buck than the SW1911.
