Hello and welcome aboard!
My M41 is designed for 22LR and doesn't function with shorts.
I don't know if shooting shorts may damage the chamber in a .22, but I'm not going to chance it on my gun.
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in and edumacate us both.

Unless you have one of the Model 41's specifically chambered for 22 Short ammo with the aluminum slide and magazines designed for 22 Short you will not be able to use 22 shorts except in the single shot mode.
If you have one of the hard to come by original 22 Short chambered Model 41's then you have the usual trials to determine which ammo functions most reliably.
When I shot 22 shorts in the Olympic Rapid Fire matches I used a Walther OSP which functioned reliably with CCI CB Caps, Fiocchi, RWS ammo but would tolerate Aguilla SM most of the time.
Hope this helps.

Dewnay52,
Hello and Welcome to the Forum.
Congratulations on acquiring an elusive 41-1. I would love to have one, but I've never even seen one in person. There is a lot of interest on this model here with several very knowledgeable members. I'm sure they will want to know the serial# of the pistol and please if possible post a couple of pic's. Lot's of interesting posts on this model, do a search and sit back and enjoy. I'm sure the pro's will be along shortly..

I'll subscribe to this thread and I apologize for revealing my ignorance!!
Sounds like you have a very special gun there. Hopefully I can learn a bit as more of our members notice this thread.
We have some really knowledgeable members here, even Roy Jinks the S&W historian is here!!!

Thank you all for the warm welcomes. Attached are a couple of photos that were posted online by the LGS where I purchased the 41-1. I haven't been able to pick it up yet as there is a 10-day waiting period. I have been in contact with Tom Beckwith and Jim (smithfan4152) who have been great resources. The gun came with two sets of grips, the factory originals and the ones pictured. I believe the installed grips are smooth factory Goncalo Alves but maybe someone can confirm.
Thanks,
D.

Very nice gun you have there. I would have snatched that one up. I borrowed a .22 short kit from smithfan4152 a while back and it functioned just fine with the CCI shorts I had on hand. Very little to no recoil and very accurate.

G’day and welcome to the forum
That is a great addition to anyone’s collection.
The production of 41-1s stopped in 1973, in 1976 this one was built along with 27 others, from parts still in inventory. I would be very interested in seeing more pictures of the gun especially the 41-1 stamping, as well as the box lid and end. Thanks.
I have a couple of 41-1s and have to admit I have never fired one. In Australia the chosen flavour for the 41-1 was CCI.
Shoot and enjoy this fine firearm, and if you ever decide to sell you will find it is a very good investment as well.
Cheers.

G'day Jamie,
Here's a photo of the end label that I took at the shop. I will post photos of the box top and 41-1 stamping after I pick the gun up next week.

those smooth grips may be factory. when you get it home, take them off and see if there is any letters or numbers on the inside. I have a pair of smooth goncalo alves grips I bought from smith many years ago. think they are on one of the hvy. bbl guns. will try to look tomorrow and get a couple of pics on this thread. would like to se the left grip too.

I see "DROS" on the hang tag, meaning California. Is that the one that was at J&R in Livermore ??

Hi Conrad,
Yes it was. My nephew saw it in their newsletter but apparently it was in the counter since Nov 1. I was very fortunate.

Thanks for the picture, looking forward to see more.
You were very lucky to purchase it, most people don’t know what they are looking at, those that do don’t hesitate on a rare find like this one. When I spotted it a week ago it was already sold. Most of my 41-1s never hit the market, once on the market you have to be quick.
Cheers.

I note the "ST" in the special features box on the end label, smooth target stocks on the pistol.
Thats quite a find you have. It's at the top of my grail gun list. Sadly they are never seen in my parts.

I did see the special feature "st" and thought it means "short" as this is normally in the special feature as "short" or "sh" for a 41-1. Target stock is "ts" don't know what smooth Target stock would be, sts? A letter is the only answer as special features are normally documented.
Very interesting what ever it means.

Here's a photo of the 41-1 stamping. Does it look OK? The "1-1" doesn't seem to be stamped as deeply as the other characters.

Thanks for posting.
It all looks good to me. Your gun looks genuine no problems there.
I believe the frames are made up stamped Model 41 and if turned into a 41-1 the -1 was stamped later. This is why the -1 can appear different from one gun to the next. Your 1-1 looking different appears to me as an optical illusion, if you cover the -1 the Model 41 stamping looks great.
Cheers.

41-1
I have found that they can look bad and Letter Good, Then you have Perfectly stamped, and no flaws, and it does not letter...
So Hopefully this one will, and it is in the same range as one I recently sold that did letter, within 30 or so.

I'm also in Livermore. I have 2 pick ups this weekend at J&r. They were telling me that gun as having been used in the Olympics. No paper to back that story though. Cool piece. I molested it a few times over the month of november. But i passed, I'm not a competition target shooter. From the same estate as that 41, I bought the 1957 colt huntsman though.
I think doms had 22 shorts last time I was in there

ElToro,
Thanks for passing on the 41-1. I still can't believe I was able to buy it. I didn't hear about it being used in the Olympics. Did they happen to mention the name of the shooter? That would be too cool if it carried that history.
Congrats on the 1932 Outdoorsman. My nephew who told me about the 41-1, saw it on J&R's Facebook page but it was labeled as a Model 14 and he didn't look carefully at the picture. He's been kicking himself about it.
And thanks for the tip about the .22 shorts at Doms. I will check it out. Do you recall what brand ammo it was? I've been able to find a couple of boxes of CCI .22 Short Target and a couple of old boxes of Eley Rapid Fire Match.

Finally Received Factory Letter for My 41-1
After waiting 4 months, I finally received the factory letter confirming my gun left the factory in 1977 as a Model 41-1 in the last group produced. It also indicated the smooth stocks were added after leaving the factory.
