I have been a wheel gun man for a long while , have a bunch in my collection . I picked a lot buy this aft , two semi's and a model 66 stubnose . My original plan was to sell the semi and get the revolver for free . I have no idea what to sell the semi's for or how to fix one , so any input would be appreciated

First is a 645 Original box papers and goodies , pacmyer grip's with originals too I Cant find any locally and have no idea value or rarity .

Next is a 39-2 nickel original box paper work and even wax paper , That i think is missing the slide stop button . I may be wrong on terms

would it be worth getting a smith to fix it or sell as is , I mean is there a market for this ?

Welcome to the forum plant monkey. Your slide release is there in your 39-2. The 645 goes for $500 to $800 all day long like yours. The 39-2 goes for $400 to $600. Hope this helps some and you should list them here so that some smith lovers can help ya out.

The above statement may change if you decide to start shooting those pistols, especially the 645.
The 645 is not rare, but they have become difficult to locate, especially in the box with all contents. There are many threads here on this model and they are a pleasure to shoot. They are almost never seen in my parts, and if you can find one it's going to be pricey. I believe the same can be said for you folks in the U.S. I own one with adjustable sights and wouldn't part with it. I can't comment on the Model 39 as I don't own one, but someone will be along shortly to help you out.

Welcome plantmonkey... those pistols to start out with, puts you way ahead ahead of the game. The M39-2 is a very sought after gun, many feel that it's ergonomics is second to none.

I have a blued M39-2 and tend to agree... the first time you hold one in your hand it just feels right.

Either one won't last long after being put up for sale on this forum. If it wasn't for me being in CA where they can't be shipped... I'd be all over them.

Up to about 5 years ago I was mainly into S&W revolvers, then a 4506-1 came my way and I was hooked. If I was in your shoes... I'd keep 'em.

You are correct, the 39-2 is missing the slide stop button. Having it fixed may cost more than the extra money you'd get for it, but it will broaden your potential buyer pool....these were staked onto the frame and although not a common occurrence, they did sometimes come off....

Same here. I got hooked a few months ago & now I can't stop looking for them. Those two look nice, I'd keep them if I was you or you'll regret it later.

Maybe it is just me but please define "slide stop button" for all I can see everything is as it is suppose to be??

To the original poster (OP):

First of all, welcome.

Now, down to business. I don't see many 645s around, but when I do, they're usually with adjustable sight, like the one I found a few years ago with the box and all the goodies inside (photo below). It appears yours has the 2nd Gen fixed rear sight. If it's like new in the box, I would not let it go for less than $700. Actually, here in Southern California, we're talking more like $750+. Actually, actually, I wouldn't let it go, period. It's a great example of a big boy S&W pistol . . . the pinnacle of 2nd Generation pistols, IMHO.

Here is a pic of a slide stop button. On the OPs nickel 39-2 it is clearly missing, you can see the hole in the frame where it once lived....it's the round button just to the rear of the slide stop, above the grip....

I took both of them to range this weekend, I must say I'm rarely impressed . The 45 shot better than a colt I use to have and the 39 was just amazing point and shoot. I'm definitely gonna keep that 39 after all. Everything that was said about it was true.

My second 9mm pistol was a 39-2 (first being a commercial Walther P-1) over thirty years ago. Loved that pistol till the safety failed to operate. I unloaded the gun, took it home, stripped it, put it back together, and it worked fine. I never did discover what made the thing fail, but got rid of it shortly thereafter.
The gun has the best ergonomics of any mid-bore I ever handled and only wish they could be duplicated in the 908 I'm wearing right now.

the exact same thing happened to me on the 39-2 I had... with exactly the same result....found it a new home....traded it for an AMT .22 auto mag.....worst deal I ever made...by farrrrrrr

These are fine guns. I own my original 39-2 & 645... plus gaining an original 39- . Keep them. You've got a great deal on all of them. Be Happy.

Thanks for clarifying. I thought the "slidestop button" was the "slide stop release" and what was missing "just" was a "notch" on the gun.
