Help me build my CCW
I would like to piece together my ideal carry gun, and I'm looking for some direction.
I don't believe there is such an animal, but what I want to start with would be, according to the numbering system, a 4514.
A couple of features I would like to incorporate, if possible:
1. 45 ACP
2. Black or blued finish
3. fiber-optic front sight
4. Left-side only de-cocker
My questions:
1. Would I be better off starting with a 457? I seem to remember the 908 I once owned had a different front sight setup than my 3913. I definitely want a fiber optic front sight.
2. Would a 4513 be a better platform to start with (not that these are just laying around everywhere)? I could live with a stainless finish, I just prefer black.
3. I have only owned TDA 3rd gens. Is the DAO trigger lighter than the DA trigger on a TDA pistol? This would eliminate my de-cocker problems.
4. Is there a pistol that has these features already that I'm overlooking?
This isn't anything I'm expecting to happen overnight. More of a fun project, but I do think it would be an ideal carry piece. In the meantime, I'll somehow "get by" with my 3913!

unless I'm missing something you already know what you need....a 457 and change the sights...I want to do that myself..

If you want to try DAO, there's the 457D. It's double action only and a special order item for the Chicago PD, but also sold commercially. I don't have any interest currently in the 457, but if the D version came along, I'd be tempted. I had a 3953 (DA only and without a re-strike capability.) It's pull was similar to a first shot TDA, but smoother and slightly lightly. I never tried to measure the pull, but I think it was also shorter.
Now that I think about it, the 457D has a different trigger system (I think) and I don't know if my experience would carry over to the D. There are some 457Ds out there and someone will chime in, I'm sure.

The 457 jumped to mind right away, but I'm assuming it is to the 4513 what the 908 is to the 3913. I found my 908 to be (understandably) rough around the edges, and a little thicker than the 3913, but i think that was due to the slide being less beveled. Can the 457 front sight be changed? For some reason, I thought the 908 sight was a different design than the 3913.
I also think I would like it to be de-cock only, as opposed to the safety.

+1 on the de-cock only. I too would like to know how to change my 457's to this.

I have read of that change but I am not sure what the process is to do it. I think it is just some parts changing, but trusting my memory on that is not prudent. I was issued a 4566, which is a decocker only variant, but still DA/SA. I would prefer DAO. The DA/SA is not something I favor. Harder to shoot, and serves no useful purpose.
I have no need for one at all, but a DAO 69XX (6966, I guess if stainless can be had, otherwise a 6964) would be really nice.

I believe in addition to parts, there was some special milling on the slide for the decock only models. I doubt the 457 has this. Hopefully Fastbolt will see this and chime in.

I think you need one of these police surplus 457s mentioned in this thread: Used 457 on the way...
That way you'd have plenty of money left over for sights, ammo and holster and could have fun with a project gun getting it just the way you wanted. The commonality of controls and similar size to your 3913 makes this a natural choice, and you can spend as little or as much money on "building" an ideal CCW.
