Default Removing Mag Safety?

What do you folks think about removing the magazine safety on third generation Smith's? I removed it from a 4516-2 and like it that way. All my M&P's, Glocks and 1911's do not have a mag safety and it just seems right.

If you like your magazine safety, you can keep you magazine safety. Period.

Personal preference. For me I would rather have one round go bang then none if somehow the mag wasn't there or seated properly when I needed it.

Remove it. I never figured out why it was there. If one lives by the simple rule "don't put your finger on the trigger unless you want to fire a round" there is no point in having a mag safety. It is for people who are not "gunpeople" (and believe me that includes a lot of soldier and cops as well as any one else).

I have 3rd gens with mag disconnects and other guns without. It's not an issue, although one can sit and think long enough to create one. Basically--I don't mess with firearm functions.

Back around the mid 70's, I recall a discussion with my step-father about a the murder of a patrol officer on Sunrise Blvd not too far from my house. A "routine" traffic stop escalated into a physical altercation. The bad guy got the upper hand and killed the officer with the officer's service revolver.

The department had been evaluating the M39 and M59 at that time and there was a great deal of "armchair quarterbacking" going on back then. Much of it around the magazine disconnect safety on these new fangled self loaders. "If only he had a one of these, he could have popped the magazine and disable the weapon", and there were many more "what if's". I do know it was not long after I started seeing a lot of guys stopping by the house with a M59 on their belt. As I recall, the magazine disconnect was a big selling feature to LE departments back then.

Likewise there were many who were vehemently opposed the the magazine disconnect. I've often wondered why. Having spent a bit of time as a rangemaster and SAI I suspect those folks were the same who tended to dump or unseat a magazine in the midst of a string of fire then demand an alibi re-shoot in spite of poor manual of arms. Denied I say!

Here's my thoughts on the matter: I view the magazine disconnect as a the safety feature of last resort. I own several 3rd gens and have one of them on my belt every day. Hopefully I'll never find myself in anything remotely similar to the even I described up top. However, like the saying goes, "hope for the best, plan for the worst". If the dice ever roll against me I know I can disable my sidearm before it's taken and used against me. Might just provide the time needed to bring BUG or blade into action and save my bacon.

Magazine Disconnect, Take it out or leave it in, either way the basic weapon function & trigger feel is unchanged. Personally on my guns, I leave it be. And that's what I recommend.

Also know that if you ever intend to compete with it, IDPA for instance. Disabling a factory safety feature disqualifies the weapon from competition.

Cheers
Bill

I used to have no use for magazine disconnectors, but I discovered another valid reason for them. Both of my nieces, who have toddlers underfoot, acquired 3rd gens from their favorite relative, dear old Uncle Tom. One has a 3913 LadySmith; the other has a 3953. Both can leave the gun with a round in the chamber and keep the magazine on their person and the gun is totally safe. (I have to add that all other mags are safely locked away so the kids have no access.) In case the pistol is needed, all the mom or dad has to do is grab the gun and slam home the mag. No racking the slide and the threat of fumbling the chore or having a round not chamber. Seat the magazine and pull the trigger.

No offense but that sounds like one of the most irresponsible ways I've ever heard of to store a handgun around kids. You do know that the kid could stick something in the magwell and trip the disconnector while staring down the barrel with his fingers on the trigger? Is it likely, maybe not, but it's way too much of a risk. Lock your guns in one of those little biometric safe boxes on each floor or carry them with you. Don't leave them out for kids to play with, safety or no.

Now back to disconnects, don't care for them and removed the one from my FS M&P 45. If by some random chance I drop a mag and still need to fire, I can.

A mag safety never made much sense to me, so when I remove the rear sight I pull the spring removing the disconnect feature . I like the hammer drop only on my tsw guns and would love to have all my others done the same way . Not a fan of positive safeties on DA/SA semi autos .
