Default S&W MODEL 41* DOUBLE "MODEL 41" STAMP (ROLL MARK)**********************

Hello
As the title states: I have a Model 41, Serial #A118xxx, 7 3/8" barrel, muzzle brake, year 1970, 98%, box, false brake, internal weights, some papers.
This gun was NOT re-blued, it has the Original bluing.
There is a very faint stamping of (Model 41) UNDER another stamping (which appears to be a standard depth) off-set and on top of the faint stamping.

Can anyone explain this double stamping? Could this gun have been sold as a second?
I am attaching a photo which I hope can be read.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Thank you.

Default Monday Or Friday Gun

Probably a Monday or Friday gun, or an employee was having a bad day. I've actually seen guns with upside down lettering, and guns marked which were different Models from what they were, a Model 29 marked as a Model 27. They make interesting conversation pieces.

As noted by Model39 - various such "errors" are not common, but not "RARE" either - double stamps, crooked stamps, partial stamps, etc. As stamping is often at or near end of the process of mfg. and not critical to function (basically cosmetic), S&W (and other mfg.) are not going to scrap units and I have never seen a "discount" on firearms.

Gentlemen

Thank you for your timely responses.
I am pleased to read (what I thought) you answers to this "Double Stamping" question.
High Standard employees were sold "Seconds" imperfections in a gun more reasonably, so I was thinking maybe S&W did the same.

Great group of members.
With best regards,
Ed
