Default 4013 value?

My FIL has a nice 4013 that I fell in love with some time back. I informed him I would love to buy it from if he ever became interested.

He has offered it to me, but has not given me a price. I do not want to low ball him.

What would be a fair offer?

I paid $650 for mine new in the box. They are hard to find and I don't regret the purchase at all. Great gun.

I paid $650 with 7 mags. The only thing that made it worth that money was all the mags. Some ask $45 per mag! This pistol is now a convertible which will shoot 40 or 10mm with a change of barrel, spring and mags.

Is it a single stack 4013 or is it the double stack 4013TSW?

Only the single stack can be converted to 10MM.

I bought a used 4014 (the somewhat rare blue version) last year for $425 delivered to me door. I plan on adding a 4013 this year. Many of them get sold in the $425+ category.

mitchjt,
Keep your eyes open. CDNN blew out a bunch of these magazines at $11.99 or $12.99 a summer or two ago. I bought myself a dozen at the time. When a deal comes up you have to jump on it quickly.

It is a single stack.

I think I'll offer $650, does that sound fair, being family?

I purchased a 'gently used' 4013TSW, original case, two mags and some soft-goods (holsters) 6 years ago for $600. Love the pistol. Shoots better than I deserve, easy to carry and conceal - with the right rig and is comfortable in the hand.
Not fancy, no rail, electronics, lasers or bling, but a very nice, solid pistol.

If it's 98% or better and comes with the box and at least a couple of magazines, that's not too bad for "family". Here's mine that I bought new in 1995.

Good luck.

Default 4013 value?

I read FIL as FFL - kept pondering over the family connection and finally broke the code.

For what it's worth, $650 is about $200 too high on the open market. However, having said that, if you were my son-in-law, and I was ready to get rid of a gun, it would be yours with no money changing hands.

My advice is to not complicate your relationship by offering money to family - perhaps his refusal to place a price on the pistol hints at this.

pmoseley makes some good points.

But if money does need to change hands, under the circumstances and since family is involved, perhaps you can tell your FIL you would be willing to pay what he thinks the pistol is worth, as long as you can afford it. That puts the ball in his court, where, as the seller, it rightfully should be, and also (if the price is agreeable and the deal is done) should take care of any future hard feelings on either side. If his price is too high for you, you have a very reasonable "out" for declining to purchase it.

I agree with pmoseley, though, that if my son-in-law wanted a pistol I had, and that I no longer intended to shoot or own, he would receive it as a gift with my best wishes. (That speaks more about the kind of son-in-law HE is than the kind of father-in-law I am.)

Keep in mind that I don't know what state you're in. Here it Southern California S&W 3rd Gens are quite high right now. I would not pay $650 for one (of course I have one ).

Now, if my father-in-law was selling a S&W 3rd Gen, I would have no problem whatsoever paying over the market. I would look at it two ways. First, the cash will help him since he's on a fixed income. Second, my wife is going to inherit whatever he has someday (he's now 92). Now, if my farther-in-law was quite well off, I might expect him to sell it to me cheap or give it to me. Everyone's circumstances are different. It's family for goodness sakes, just do what you think is fair under the circumstances.

Good luck.
