Unhappy Model 52-2 Trigger/Hammer Stuck !

Hello there!

well, I am in trouble.... I left the 52-2 in the safe for a couple of years and tonight I decided to clean it up. all went well until I tried to "shoot" after reassembling.... hammer locked in the "open" position, trigger moves but no action.

Magazine is in with a dummy load; turned overtravel screw way back and now I have a "disturbing" double click but still no action.

Anybody has experience anything similar?
Thank you!

Yes, I have seen this on a 41 or was it a 39, sounds like the same issue, when I stripped the gun the owner had assembled it incorrectly. I cannot remember the fault/fix,. For some reason I think it was either the sear handing down rather than being against the hammer, although thinking about this the hammer would not lock back, another one I fixed the trigger bar had been assembled incorrectly again I cannot remember if the it was the trigger bar spring or the way the trigger bar was put in. Either way one of these was the fault.
First check the sear, next look at the trigger bar when you pull the trigger is it moving (should be), did the hammer fall, if not, lift the trigger bar at the back, poke with your finger (gun smith term and tool), if it works then you need to look and refit the bar correctly.
If this is of no help and no one else chimes in PM and I will strip a gun to jog my memory.
I’m not a gun smith nut, only a smith gun nut.
Good luck

Could be the disconnect, from sitting for a while. Find the trigger bar and check for freedom of movement, particularly upward spring tension (required to engage the sear).

That would be a good place to start looking, Steve

Have to agree that it is the magazine disconnect problem.

Sounds to me like the Sear assembly is in backwards. It will fit both ways, only works one way.

Thank You for the replies!

I did a typo in the post, it is a 52-1 model (long ejector) but it should not be much of a difference.

I did only field strip it and took the sides off. So no chances I mounted things backwards, but it is very good to know what I can do if I try :-)

How do I clean the magazine disconnect? Do I need to take the backstrap , mainspring and work my way through the action?

I was all thumbs trying to reply on my cell phone.
Do not disassemble the pistol.
Just remove the left grip panel and give me a call.

SOLVED!!!

Big credit to M19-5 and USBP SW for figuring it out!
M19-5 gave me a very good start: he told me to simply remove the left side grip and do not take the action apart...

well there were very few things I could do from there ( and very few damages i guess). so I checked for the movement of the sear by gently pushing it at the bottom... click ...the hammer was released!

Gun scrubbed that area, wait, clean with compressed air, then add a very little oil.... the sear was moving just fine but still no trigger action.

Transfer trigger bar was moving back and fort but not engaging the sear... desperation....ready to give up... then back to this forum read again ..."check for freedom of movement, particularly upward spring tension (required to engage the sear)" ... Bingo!

the bar was not moving up but only back! Looked at the schematics and found that there is a little pin that is supposed to protrude from the frame and was gummed up down in its hole. Gun scrubber... air ... more gun scrubber, air, oil. Bar moves up and all is back to normal!!

THANK YOU! Hope that this writing will serve to some other poor soul in trouble.

Just an update:
I removed the red dot mount and restored the grips. Went to the range using just iron sights...

Put 4 out of five circles touching on the first mag off hand at 50 feet... I never did so good... Got excited and then holes were all over the place.... Oh well just need more practice. All work fine and it is just a pleasure to use it. Thank you again.

Glad to see you enjoying the 52, there are few pistols that are as shootable. However, they can also be unforgiving, I think it has something to do with the long recoil and barrel time. In any event, it develops good shooting skills.

Take care, Steve

I do not remember right now but I may have the papers. Just need to check. If you are interested I was thinking donating it anyhow.

It is aluminum black and comes with two replacement screw and Allen wrench. Theoretically, it would fit between the frame and the right grip panel. From there it extends above the slide. From the back it look like an upside down capital L. When I tried to mount back the wood grip, the handle was too wide for my comfort, hence I did use the pistol with one wood grip side on the left. It works well for me except in sweltering days in the south when the palm of my hand would rather deal with a cold beer than with the aluminum.

Let me know if you are interested, I will not be able to do anything with it for at least a couple of weeks, than I will probably post it as a giveaway in the proper section of the forum.

This forum rocks and I need more time at the range. Follow through the shoot is the key. Mental training is as hard as a marathon. Groups are back together, just need to sustain the concentration but I am happy. Thank you Steve.
