Default Shield Mods, What have you done and Why?

I have a 9mm Shield with a trigger job. I have been thinking of night sites and maybe a lazer. what have you done and why?

If it isn't usable as it comes from the maker for me: any mods necessary to make it functional are problematic to me.

Back in the day, I figured that any S&W could use a trigger job by a very good gunsmith.

With current S & W products, I don't think a trigger job helps enough to be worth doing. There are too many problems to fix to be worth trying.

I think modern S&W products are so unpleasant as to be beyond fixing.

Just my opinion, of course.

1 Shield 40 $450 (+ fees)
2 Lasermax $76.78
3 Dawson Precision Fiber Optic front sight $46.25
4 Apex Shield Carry Kit $89.99
5 Nemesis Pocket Laser Holster $21.83
6 Talon Grips $13.99
7 Throat Reamed $34.00
8 Total = $734

And still not thrilled for what my purposes were.

1. Needed something reliable to pocket carry and replace Radom P-64, but with more power and effective range greater than 25 yards. The 40S&W meets the power and range goal, but pocket carry is tough. Pocket carry is really my only main issue, and if it was smaller and lighter, it would have been perfect. Too much to ask in a 40, which needs weight to try taming the recoil. After 18 months of using the Shield 40, considering moving to Sig P938, as I find I am pocket carrying the wife's P238 more often now. Or, might give up pocket carry and move it IWB.

2. Dusk 'till Dawn is the time most would need self defense weapon, and laser works best during those times as well as indoors, and increases effective range.

3. Front sight sucked. Nice improvement, but not very tight fit and find it moving, requiring frequent adjustment and Loctite.

4. Even though this was not a MA compliant version, just a normal US version, trigger sucked, nowhere close to advertised, and closer to 10+lbs. After S&W did a free trigger job to correct (while they were also fixing the 40 mag drop issue as well as factory front sight almost falling off left side), Apex was only a moderate improvement.

5. Best method to pocket carry.

6. Talon's feel much better, but sadly do not stay attached for long and do not help with sharp recoil from the 40. Pachmayr Tactical Rubber Grip Glove (not shown) work much better.

7. No throat and sharp edge equals no lead. Throat reamer corrects and now the best boolits can be used.

8. yep, suckers born everyday.

I would guess that all the above things changed a pistol that was 90% to one that was 95% perfect. In other words, not really needed except for the throat reaming.

I haven't made any modifications to the one that I recently bought. I don't mind the trigger and the sights are OK. However, the sights might get replaced in the near future. Otherwise I like it the way it is.

Talon Rubber grips (I put them on all my polymer guns)
Apex Carry kit
Ameriglo night sights (my white dots on the stock sights popped off during a range session)

The only modification I'll likely make is adding Night Sights to it.

Additionally....

Had two different lawyers with experience in self-defense cases recommend against trigger modifications, due to the experience of prosecutors going after that as an "intent" in multiple cases. Meaning, they attacked the shooter (self defender) by driving at that as meaning they built their weapon with the explicit intent of using it aggressively.

Apparently, that's a growing trend in these cases, whether it wins or not.

In one civil case one of the lawyers referenced, it scored enough points to "win" for the person who was shot, even though criminal court didn't see it that way.

Can you provide the court file name of that case?

Have used my 9mm shield as my everyday carry for three years now. I haven't changed a thing. The trigger is sweet just as it came, and I shoot almost as good a groups as do with my full size m&p's. I shoot this gun a lot, and practice IDPA with it and my m&p pro. Never had a FTE or FTE with either weapon. Sorry I know this thread was about changes or mods to the shield. My opinion is " if it ain't broke, don't try and fix it until is

Good question though:-)

I added the Talon rubber grips a few months back, and today I installed an Apex sear. Nothing else, just the sear. Reduced the trigger pull from 7.5 lbs to a nice 5.25 lbs.

I am the original poster and love mine just as is but I did do a trigger job on it and have thought about night sights and possibly a laser.

Default Shield Mods, What have you done and Why?

Had LGS put Trijicon night sights on my Shield. No other mods made to it, satisfied with stock trigger.

I put XS sights with the standard dot on mine. I did it because I like a tritium dot on the front only and have 50 + eyes and these work well for me.
