Default Click....click...BANG!

Monday afternoon, I became the proud owner of S&W Model 41, UBCXXXX. Magazines cycle? Check.
Trigger is ... wow, muuuuch lighter than my Ruger. Need cleaning? Not much.
Monday, early evening, cleaned up a hundred rounds of CCI SV and proceeded happily to the range to see where this beautiful creature would hit the paper.
In goes the magazine. Slide foward. Pull the trigger. Click.
Nothin.
Drop the mag. Eject the alleged dud. Slight hit. Hmmmm.
Back in the with the magazine. Slide forward. Click.
?????
Repeat above.
?????
Put the magazine back in, with only one loaded. Drop the slide.
BANG! "Holy ___!!!!"
Fill in the blank with whatever expletive you wish, because I probably was thinking them all.
This is the first time I've EVER had a slam fire happen.
Startled the bejeezus outta me.
I dropped the mag, and got the spent case out.
The two other guys shooting came over after they heard my ranting.
One tried to console me, saying that it wasn't the first time lead had been accidentally discharged in other than the desired direction.
It's 7:10. I call the LGS I'd bought the gun from.
They urged immediate cessation of firing said pistol.
OK! Like I wanted that to happen again???

Sigh.. My new to me, wonderful model 41. Waaaaah.
Late Monday evening. Handed my baby over to the LGS guys. He's going to Springfield.

I just read a post from last week about some poor guy that's looking at a 4 month wait. 4 months?
That's a looooooong time.
OK. Now I'm depressed.

Take 3 deep cleansing breaths.
1. Be thankful for no harm to you, another person, or something else from the slam fire and consider this a good learning experience for reinforcement of always keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
2. Be thankful you have the LGS on your side.

I'm really sorry to hear about that and I can sympathize for your disappointment. I'm also glad no one was hurt. I hope your 41 is returned to you in like new working order way before 4 months.

I suspect your firing pin is either broken or gummed up with some goo and sticking out of the breechface causing the slamfire. Drift out the crosspin in the slide and drop the firing pin. If it's still in one piece, clean everything thoroughly especially the recess in the slide.

Those 41's are quite simple to tear down.
Look here, scroll down to the slide detail strip section.
Model 41 maintenance
I hope you get it sorted out.

Cheers
Bill

g8rb8, wproct, BMCM...
I've thought a lot about it since Monday. I'm much less upset now.
Utmost appreciation for your kind words and good advice.
Yes, a learning experience it was, and hopefully not repeated.
I'm soooo soooo glad I've had the rules firmly cemented in my brain cells, and nothing catastrophic resulted from it.

I actually did do some deep Yoga breathing right after the scare, and then some more before I called the LGS.
They're really good guys there, and I didn't want to slam fire me at them!
Thanks again.
Oh man! I didn't get to take baby pictures! I'll be sure to post some when he comes back. All nice and fixed.
(Sooner than four months too!)

I've never had a slam fire happen so, I haven't a clue what that was like for you. I'm just glad nobody got hurt and nothing was damaged.
Hopefully, you'll get your gun back soon and in proper working order.

Default Thanks for Posting Isis1200L

We're all thankful that your slam fire did not result in any harm. Also a big thanks to you for posting your story. These are the kinds of stories we all need to read about and be aware of. I'll be thinking about you later this morning at the range.

Default Maybe since.....

Maybe since you have some time to wait you can go out and buy the next gun on your want list to fill in those idle hours.

Not a bad bit of music I will say. Not totally my favorite kind but well done. I enjoy music of all kinds period and never slam what I don't like as somebody else likes it for sure.

Hey, snubbyfan. I watched the video. I turned it up a bit, but
I'm afraid I've gotten too old for that kinda music.
I did like the correlation though.

There's a reason my Dad used to call me his wild Indian and it wasn't because I usta listen to Lawrence Welk.
Now it's mostly classic rock and even some country but every now and then I have a flashback.

LOL! I used to HAVE to WATCH Lawrence Welk.
Worse than that, although it probably improved my dexterity,
I had a few months worth of accordion lessons.

Boy I wish I'd taken pics of my 41 before it got shipped out.
That way I could post them, look at them wistfully, and imagine it back in its place in the safe, or in my hands at the range. Sigh...

I just have to think about what the guys said. It'll be back soon all nice and fixed.
