469 vs 6904
What is your opinion of each and which is the best?

I'd be extremely happy with either one in great condition at a fair price... but I'd have to admit that I'd prefer a 6904 with a round trigger guard if you pressed me. I'm having a similar dilemma right now between a 645 and a 4506 (No Dash).

Both are great guns. Either one will make you a great little 9 mm. Best of luck.

I woul agree with you about the round trigger guard. Unfortunately, my 6904 has a square guard.

Does anyone know the difference between a 469 and 6906 besides the color and the grip frame? Were the internals improved at all when the 6906 came out?
Thanks,

I've no experience with the 6906, but I wish I still had the 469 I sold in a time of fiscal emergency years ago. Got it cheap because of a nasty blemish in the finish of the frame, but it was a very nice pistol to shoot.

IIRC many complained that the 2nd generation Smith autos.....felt like you were gripping a 2x4.
I recall looking at the 469 when it was introduced and giving it a pass ....... but later I did grab an early 6906 w/ the square trigger guard and non Novak sights..... which was later replaced by one with round trigger guard and Novak night sights........ which was replaced by a PC 6906.

Yeah, the early 3rd Gens with those "square" trigger guards look a little funky... kind of like someone dropped the gun and the (2nd Gen style) trigger guard got bent. But I still wouldn't pass one up in great condition if at a price I could afford.
Like I said, right now I have to make a hard choice to make between a 645 and a 4506 (No Dash) with the funky "square" trigger guard. Beggars can't be choosers in highly restricted Massachusetts. Those are my only choices in a full-size .45... other than waiting for a 4506-1 to come along. Could be a very long wait.

Square trigger guard guns can be a bit harder to find holsters for.
There are a few dealers on ebay who have all sorts of NOS (new old stock) holsters (duty & concealment) from the 90s.

I have a 469 and a 6926--kinda the same thing. The 469--especially mine--would be a great knock-around gun, especially due to the fact that she's got some miles on her.
But tit for tat, I'd take a 3rd gen if not only for the sights. The 2nd gen sights leave something to be desired. Both of my 3rd gen smiths are on par with most current firearms. The 3-dot system is fast on target and easy to see. As an added bonus, the overall gun is a little more "refined" and easier on the eyes.

469, got one and I like it a lot. I painted the front sight yellow model paint. It came from factory with some yellow paint on the sight. I still have thoughts of making that ugly square trigger guard round. I have thought about selling the thing.

Checked out that used 645 today and came to the conclusion that I should wait and go for a 4506-1 instead (or possibly that "no dash" that I found locally). I want to like the 2nd Gens... but there is little doubt that I prefer the further refinements of the 3rd Gens.
Didn't help that the 645 was kinda showing its age. Someone enjoyed that gun a whole lot. Price was a little high but that wasn't the deciding factor. I guess I just like the 3rd Gens a wee bit better.

Someone offered a straight trade, their 469 for my 6904. After thinking about it, I decided to keep the 6904. Thanks to everyone for your thoughts.
