Default 4506 decock lever malfunctioning

I has a 4506 in extremely nice condition that will not decock the hammer consistently. I cover the the firing pin but you need to fiddle with the lever in the decock postion or hold down the rear of the slide to have the hammer drop, any ideas

The idea of a malfunctioning decocker worries me considerably. I'd get that pistol to a good gunsmith the day before yesterday.

Default decocker

I had a 10mm s&w that did the same thing, I called s&w about it and since it was a safety issue they sent a shipping label for it and fixed it at no charge.

My non-expert opinion based on what you describe sounds like a fitment issue between the safety/decocker and the sear release lever. More specifically, it sounds like the lever is just a bit too short.

I'd let a smith that knows 3rd gens look at it or give S&W a call.

I'll wager your sear release lever is worn out.
It's this little thingy:
http://www.brownells.com/handgun-par...prod14527.aspx
With the slide off, it's the inside lever on the righthand side closest to the hammer.

Not hard to replace but it does require some precise fitting and gauge checks to insure correct & safe timing of the decock function.

If you are nearby, I can do it for you. Otherwise, calling S&W for a return ticket is good advice. You're liable to have a hard time finding a local smith that knows how to work on these guns much less time a sear release lever.

Cheers
Bill

Yep, typically a sign of a worn sear release lever.

Replacing the sear release lever does take some knowledge and experience with filing the new lever to fit a particular gun. Best done by someone with that knowledge & experience.
