Default Finally Found a 5906. A Couple of Questions

I've been looking for a 5906 and a 4566 for a while. My dad carried a 4566 as his service pistol, when he was a deputy sheriff. When I was a boy, he taught me how to shoot a handgun with it.

My local gun guy gave me a call last week saying one of his distributors got some 5906's in. He said they were LE turn ins listed in good condition with one mag. I had him get me one, and It finally came in today.

The gun operates fine, and the finish is probably 80% plus. That being said: The factory plastic grips are broken in the back strap, the rear sight is a little buggered, and the end of the guide rod has a chip in the end of it. I would say it is in fair, not good condition. My gun guy did give me a discount on it. He was not very happy with the people he got it from.

Does anyone know where to get some grips, sights, and a guide rod for it?

Numrich has grips, but no recoil spring. Other than the craptastic paint job on the white dots, what's wrong with the sights?

I wouldn't be happy if the distributor sent that beater to my FFL. Were it me, I'd have sent it back.

Get a Q-tip, a round wooden toothpick and some automotive brake parts cleaner or carb cleaner. Drench the Q-Tip and dab it into those two white dots on your rear sight. Wait a couple of minutes then dig around with your toothpick. That should remove all that crud. I did this last week on a 4006 but mine were not as full as yours.

Get 'er cleaned up good and I'll bet you'll have a wonderful shooter. Good luck.

You could call S&W directly (1-800-331-0852 ext. 4125), though you may have to backorder.

These guys have been recommended for 3rd gen parts, and they're in Rapid City, SD: Jack First Gunshop - First in Gun Parts - Rapid City, South Dakota

You could also try searching eBay and Gunbroker, and I'd second trying Numrich as well.

Tracker1111: I sent you a private message about the grips. Thank you very much from one LE family to another! I told the old man about the pistol tonight, and he now wants to really try it out. He told me the stainless steel Smith's was his favorite gun to carry and shoot, when he was on the job.

I will try the q-tip \ tooth pick cleaning method on the sights this weekend. I am also going to tear it down and clean the rest of it. I think she will look pretty good cleaned up, and a good set of grips on it. It looks like it was rode pretty hard before being retired. Thank goodness Smith & Wesson built these baby's like tanks.

I have have to try the guy out in Rapid, since he is in my neck of the woods. Thank you to all for the help.

Carburetor cleaner usually works better than brake cleaner, for removing paint.

The 5906 is a tank of a 9mm cop gun. Smith really got things right with the 3rd gen autos. I don't think a better duty auto has ever been designed or built.
These are the guns the US military should have adopted.

In the late '80s-early '90s, the CHP tested 3rd gen Smiths against Glocks and the Colt Double Eagle.
Guess who came out on top?

I looked at a 4566, a 4586, and a 4026 recently. Very nice.
I love my 5946, and 6906. Can't wait to get my 5906 out of layaway jail.
Damned tough and reliable guns.

Tracker1111: Got the grips today, and got them installed. They look great. Got the pistol cleaned up the other day. loeman: The q-tip break clean worked really well on the sights. You can actually use them now. Included a few more pics of her cleaned up. Glynngaddy: Thank you again for the magazine. Now its time to take her out and let her run!

Lookin good! My 5906 came to me in a trade earlier this year. It had Hogue chubby grips on it. I got an original set from a Forum Member that did not like them. Feel great to me. Shot the 5906 a few weeks ago. Forgot how nice to shoot it was. If you ever have to paint dot sights, use a toothpick dipped in your choice of paint. It flows into the dots, and no clean up. Bob

Good evening all. New guy here. I joined this forum cause I bought one of those 5906 TSW's AIM had yesterday. With 2 extra mags and shipping $368.00. Never fired one, but I think it should be about the same as my Colt Combat Commander 9mm I bought back in 73. I probably paid the same amount back then as I did for the S&W yesterday. I hope it's in good condition.
