Default 5906 rescue for a "shooter"

I just spotted a 5906 in a LGS that is a little rough looking but I did not see any real warts on it. Adjustable rear sight and squared trigger guard. A few scuffs here and there but I'm thinking many of them will buff out. Grip in good shape. No box, papers and only 1 blued mag. I may stop back by there tomorrow and see if they will let me pop off the slide and take a look at the "innards". They will take $325 (tax included). I'm just looking at it for a range gun.

Sorry no photo.

Any advice on price is welcome

Seems perfectly reasonable in pricing - on the low side for a retail shop around here, in fact.

I paid $355 for one in what sounds like very similar condition around 2 years ago.

I'd say that's a good price, since it's an "out the door" price.

As we all know, taxes eat up plenty.

Most are worn with moderate holster rubs and the grips are in various states from looking fairly unused to really worn. If you are in the Atlanta Metro it would be worth your while to drive to Eds and pick one out and at 249.99 + tax is a flipping great deal on a truck /car gun. If I had not surpassed my 2014 allowance I would buy a couple. Hopefully they will still be available in 2015.

That's where I got my 5906, 5946, and 6906.
Bought as many mags for them as I could, too.
My 4566 is on layaway there, too.
I've dealt with them since 2006. No complaints.

I looked at (fondled) a bunch of them the first day they put them out for sale. I was on the way home from work and saw their sign stating that they had S&W LE trade-ins starting at $249.
I kind of wish I'd bought one each of the SW99 full size and compacts they had for $300, but had to prioritize.
More tactical Tupperware, or 3rd gen goodness.
3rd gens won.
When they first got them in, I told a couple of the sales people that I would tell people on this forum about them and try to help them sell.
I did it because I'd rather see them go to forum members who will appreciate them.

I picked up 3 gorgeous condition 45-- series mags for $12.50 each. Now, when I get my 4566 out of layaway jail, I'll have 5 mags for it.

I like doing business with them because I tend to get good deals there and I like the people. They have a great crew, unlike a lot of other shops.
Another LGS I can highly recommend is Elite Pawn, in Conyers.
Great bunch and great prices. They fed my sickness with a 15-3 and a 36.
Jim is a retired GA State Trooper who is also a S&W fan.
He encourages and enables my Wessonitis.
In fact, he's the one who showed me the 5946 I bought and the 4566 I have on layaway.
He encouraged me to feed the sickness, and I happily complied.

It turns out, the only treatment for Wessonitis is-buy more Smith & Wessons.

They had a guy sell/trade-in a 4566, 4586, 5904, and a 4026.
The 4566 got me the most excited.

Well, I bought it: I know I could probably have found one cheaper; but it was there, I was there, and no shipping or transfer fee. Just happened to be passing by my gun club on the way home and it emptied the first mag with no hiccups, knocking down 5 of 6, 8" plates @ 30', with the first 6 shots. I've already cleaned it up some and buffed out some of the holster wear. My second 3rd generation; my first is a 3906 bought new, way back when. I think I'm in trouble now . . . .

The 5906 is a great pistol. It is a bit heavy but that helps with recoil. $250.00 is a bargain for a good all around pistol. I would easily pay $325.00 for a nice condition one.

For anything except a show or collector gun, aesthetics mean nothing to me. It's what's inside that counts. I'm out of money too or I'd get one right now.

One good thing about S&W's third gen **06 guns is the fact they make a good impact weapon or a boat anchor in a pinch.....haha

I picked up my 5906, around May of this year. I traded a gun and a little cash. I have $467 into it. It is clean, not a LE gun. Looks to have been fired sparingly. The price seemed high to me, but it looks good, and a heck of a shooter. Bob

I bought my 5906 from Eds. The first one they sent me had issues. It was a LEO trade in that must of been used as a range gun, LOTS of wear. I contacted them and they were great. I sent it back and they sent me another. The one I got works well but it too had a few things about it. The extractor is blued, not stainless, the draw bar had a badly bent up spring clip on it and it had some wear on the barrel lugs and frame. I did a complete tear down and found lots of areas of wear on various critical parts but it is servicable and used as I knew. Much better then the first that had cracked barrel lugs and gouges in the frame where it met that would not let the extractor work right. The nylon plunger in the slide is another place to look. I guess it is pot luck when buying something online and not being able to see it yourself. I tend to be picky and can find sore spots rather quickly. Pop off the slide and clean a few key areas. You should see the score instantly.

I was very happy with the service they provided, nice people. I did ask if they can go through and find me another one in good servicable condition that I could buy but as of yesterday they said the pickings are low, about gone. They have sold most and quickly. They sold me mine for $289 shipped to my dealer with a 15 rd mag. I really wish I was there to pick from the litter when they first came in. I know there were some very low use guns in the pile. They went fast to the locals. Probably on gunbroker now for $399.

Hooksnatcher, you may be on to something special there.
It looks like your 5906 has a serial number that begins with: AIP.
I thought I read somewhere that AIP was a special designation for Automatic Improvement Program and was a limited production test platform for new features and innovations.

Hopefully, others more knowledgeable can clarify.

John

P.S. Do a Google search on this forum for: Automatic Improvement Program. There's a lot written about your rare pistol.
