In the early 1960s anyone have a square cut slide on a model 46 crack and then have it replaced?
Was it replace with another square cut slide?
Did S&W reshape the original square cut barrel to fit a new round cut slide?
or, was a new round cut barrel and slide required?
They would replace the slide and it would be necessary to take a file to the 2 corners on the barrel so the slide would go completely forward.
If someone wanted to keep the gun original and still wanting to fire the pistol, then I am sure they would just buy a new barrel and slide with the radius.
They would replace the slide and it would be necessary to take a file to the 2 corners on the barrel so the slide would go completely forward.
Thanks.
Can you please clarify?
Did S&W supply the round cut slide free or did the owner have to pay for it?
Did S&W do the filing to the barrel or was that up to the owner?
Cheers.
Good question Aussie, mines never been replaced and is a 456xx model no. which I have been led to believe is around 1963. It has the better cut in it.
Thanks Barrie
Yours would have come with the round cut slide.
Yes it will be around 1963
The change from square to round slide also occurred around the same time.
Cheers.
I have looked hard and wide for an answer and found some very interesting information along the way. Clearly the most interesting is a document for the Model 46 dated a year before production began. Now here is where it’s get really interesting, the gun in the Picture is not a 46 nor is it a 41, it’s a cross of the 2, a transitional model or prototype. Now that would be a find on a gun show table.
Apologies for getting off track with the thread, its exciting stuff, well I think it is.
Still not sure about this change over/replacement process, possibly indicating that very few were changed.
Cheers.
