Mod 41 Magazine Issue
I just purchased a second magazine for my 1958 model 41 and it will not drop out when the release button is depressed. The magazine appears to be an older model with the metal follower with the "rolled or folded" shape, for lack of a better description. The magazine inserts OK, and mechanically feeds and extracts the rounds OK when working the slide but I have not actually been to the range with it yet. The magazine looks genuine in every respect with the S&W logo and construction details. The magazine is easily removed by hand so maybe it just needs a little break in time as it looks brand new. Any input would be welcome. Thanks, Willyboy

Does the mag have any friction points when it enters the magwell? Also does the release button feel harder to push than usual?

A drop of light oil on the inside of the mag housing just might give you the extra lubrication you may need for this new mag until it gets broken in a bit. Mine is the same year of production as yours and accepts all 10 of my mags no matter what the age but was sticky on a few of the newer ones when I 1st bought them last year. The oil worked for me to help break them in.

Magazine Issue
OK, I tried doing a light oil coating on the magazine and the magazine well too. And I checked the feel of the mag release button and magazine insertion and there is no difference that I can tell between the two magazines. The second magazine is still not releasing by itself, but will pull out easily. The original magazine has some wear marks that the second magazine does not, so I think a few trips to the range will solve the problem. Thanks for all your input, Willyboy

Give it some time Willy as it will break in to your gun and probably be alright. I went thru the same experience on a few of mine. Every mag is slightly different and will work their way in over time.

I agree with Barie. See how it goes at the range. If the magazine does not get better, I would contact Smith and Wesson for a replacement.

Might try 1/2 turn on mag release button. Depress the mag catch plunger to allow rotation.

mod 41 magazine issue
I recently purchased a new magazine for my model 41 and had a similar problem. When I examined the magazine I noticed a very small wear mark/shiny spot in the bluing on the side of the buttplate.....an indication that the buttplate was rubbing on the frame as the magazine was trying to exit. Removal of a very small amount of material from this area cured the problem.
