Default Inherited a 4516

Just inherited a 4516-2 and I would like to freshen up the finish. It has a few light scratches and some carry wear. Any one know what S&W used to finish it? Bead blast with what?

Something in my deep, dark memory tells me that when manufactured, S&W tumbled bare frames and slides with ceramic stones.

However when sent in for a refinish, I think they bead blast.

For stainless revolvers and pistols, I have been blasting with aluminum oxide, #120. I don't know if it's the media I've been getting, or all others are the same, but mine come out with an attractive grey tint.

Where is a good source to get the aluminum oxide media you are using?

I've ordered it on-line through Amazon, bought it at Harbor Freight and bought it at hardware stores where welding and bead blasting supplies are found. It works well, doesn't promote rust and removes rust and bluing rapidly.

There is a post about the "secret sauce" which is a blast mix that is sold by McMaster Carr and it matches the factory finish perfect. If I can find that post, I will link it. I have done probably 2-3 full guns and 6-7 slides and they look factory.

Thanks, I’ll check them out. Need some for my blast cabinet.
