I posted a couple of months ago that I got a fairly nice 645 at WAC gun show in Puyallup WA. Well, I finally got a chance to get out to my favorite indoor range with a buddy today.
The 645 was *dry* when I got it, must have been cleaned and never lubed. I did my usual Hoppes oil and Gunslick treatment that all the S&W semi-autos get - drops of oil on the rails and a few key pivot points, and the black grease on the rubbing points like the barrel lugs and the forward bearing surfaces of the barrel.
As with all new guns, I loaded a single round for the first test firing. One round, almost dead center in the bullseye at 7 yds. I put the gun down, turned to the buddy - "OK, good enough!"
As out of practice as I was, I was very pleased with the accuracy of this gun. the first full magazine was all one big hole, with one slight flyer. I ran DA, SA only, strong hand and weak hand targets, everything was great.
My only issue is with the trigger. This is nowhere as good as a 3rd gen. trigger. The DA pull is very long and breaks almost as the trigger hits the back of the trigger guard. I actually had to adjust where my trigger finger hits on the trigger to prevent the ball from being pinched between the trigger and guard. In SA, there is significant creep from where the trigger starts to take up from the reset point, and again it breaks almost touching the trigger guard.
I had my 4566 along as a comparison, and it was night and day going back to that after the 645.
The recently acquired 908S also got it's first workout. Nothing surprising there, good accuracy and no bad behaviors. No failures of any kind over a couple of hundred rounds of .45, and 100 of 9mm. Just good dependable S&W quality.
