Default 645 - first range trip

I posted a couple of months ago that I got a fairly nice 645 at WAC gun show in Puyallup WA. Well, I finally got a chance to get out to my favorite indoor range with a buddy today.

The 645 was *dry* when I got it, must have been cleaned and never lubed. I did my usual Hoppes oil and Gunslick treatment that all the S&W semi-autos get - drops of oil on the rails and a few key pivot points, and the black grease on the rubbing points like the barrel lugs and the forward bearing surfaces of the barrel.

As with all new guns, I loaded a single round for the first test firing. One round, almost dead center in the bullseye at 7 yds. I put the gun down, turned to the buddy - "OK, good enough!"

As out of practice as I was, I was very pleased with the accuracy of this gun. the first full magazine was all one big hole, with one slight flyer. I ran DA, SA only, strong hand and weak hand targets, everything was great.

My only issue is with the trigger. This is nowhere as good as a 3rd gen. trigger. The DA pull is very long and breaks almost as the trigger hits the back of the trigger guard. I actually had to adjust where my trigger finger hits on the trigger to prevent the ball from being pinched between the trigger and guard. In SA, there is significant creep from where the trigger starts to take up from the reset point, and again it breaks almost touching the trigger guard.

I had my 4566 along as a comparison, and it was night and day going back to that after the 645.

The recently acquired 908S also got it's first workout. Nothing surprising there, good accuracy and no bad behaviors. No failures of any kind over a couple of hundred rounds of .45, and 100 of 9mm. Just good dependable S&W quality.

Nice gun!

Sometimes it just takes time to become accustomed to a different trigger. I have to use a different finger placement for different guns although my 3rd Gens are about the same.

If it is gritty, polish up the draw bar. It should smoot it up a bit, perhaps a Wolff hammer spring? Believe it or not a 4506 mim hammer even improved the pull on one of my 645's.

I have both a 645 and a 4506-1. The SA on my 645 is smoother, but the DA on the 4506 is better. The 645 has what seems to be a staged DA trigger. I can cock it back about a 1/4, stop and the final pull is much smoother.

I put a set of Wolff springs in my 645 which greatly improved the trigger.
Also, if this is your first 645 be sure you put a drop of Loctite on the right side safety screw or you'll be looking for a new one. They're noted for coming loose and flying off with just a few rounds.

When we changed from .357 revolvers to semi-autos we were issued a 645 pistol. I liked them and they shot well. About six months before I retired we were issued a 4506. Mine had been to the range once, 50 rounds. As was policy at the time, when we retired we were given our service firearm. Mine is cleaned and in the safe. I carry a CS45, I love both pistols.

The 645 is a great gun, both accurate and exceptionally reliable. It can seat empty brass and it can be cocked in a pinch before one goes into harm's way (you can also most likely even carry one cocked, but I don't recommend it for the same reason I don't recommend carrying a loaded Glock with a round in the chamber).

The 645 is a little on the large side, but it's as good as a .45 auto can be until you acquire a 4506. Not sure I'd prefer one over a .357 revolver, but for police work, the extra few shots might be advantageous. For hiking or camping, I'll keep my .357.
