Well I have to say it is the fault of all of those who post on this forum about how great the 3rd gen S&W's are. Based on your recommendation, I acquired a 5906 Police trade in from Bud's for $349 with free shipping. The 5906 was as clean as a whistle when I took it apart to clean it and it only needed to be oiled. I cleaned up the sights and brightened the dots with nail polish too. The grip shows some wear and I'll be looking to replace those as soon as I find some new ones. At the range the gun functioned just fine with no issues. The range officer provided me with some advice on the number of pistols a man needs - just one more. I think it will be another 3rd gen...

cnette01: You have what I belive is one of the Finest and most accurate 9mms made. I still shoot and carry my 80s 5906 and 6906s. And they both are bet your life accurate. After 100,000s of rounds fired. Keep it Clean and Lubed. I use Flitz and Breakfree.

You already appreciate how nice these pistols are.
But for that kind of price?!?! Crazy good.

Locate some grips and then maybe go to Wolff and get yourself a service pack set + a 14# recoil spring or two. You may not need the service pack, but it is good insurance.

If you reload 9mm...
I would recommend a 12# and maybe a 10# to try too.

cnette01, nice score on the 5906. You might check with S&W , they may have some grips left. They might even have some of the straight back type also.

What were your first thoughts upon examining your 5906?

I have both the 5906 and the 2nd Gen 659, and they are beautiful guns. I'm old enough to remember when the hi-cap guns became available. I couldn't conceive of a pistol that would fire 15-16 rounds and I really wanted a Beretta 92 9mm. Then, when the 659 was introduced, I was able to save up my nickels and get one. It was gorgeous and it fired every time I pulled the trigger. Up to then, I was a revolver fan who didn't trust autos. I'd read Bill Jordan and he didn't have many good things to say about autos; however, the new wave of hi-cap pistols seemed to remove all my doubts. And the 659 was stainless steel, which was a big selling point with me. The 5906 also was an astounding gun and both fed all bullet shapes commercially available, something that was pretty new to me.

S&W 5906 (top) and 659. I have a personal affinity for the latter.

I could only find a part number for a curved grip(203540000). It doesn't show a straight grip for the 5906. I guess you'll have to call S&W; Midway & Brownell's have it on back order.

Thanks everyone for the help and kind words. My first thought on seeing the 5906 was how surprised I was at the condition it was in and how clean it was for a Police trade in. I was also impressed with the quality and feel of the weapon in my hand. My 16 year old son wants to know when I'm getting one for him!

I set up a product arrival notification for the grip with Midway, and I hope they come in soon. Midway shows the status as out of stock and overdue. I'll also look into getting a set of Wolff springs as suggested.

I was able to find new replacement grips for my 4006 and 5906 at Numrich not too long ago but they are showing sold out now for the 5906.

You may have to look for the straight back under a S&W 915. That's how I was able to get an excellent straight grip for mine.

I have just purchased a 5946. Does the wolff spring lighten the. 12 pound trigger?
I was also wondering is if it was Possible to put the 5906 doa/sa trigger on the 5946

I clipped a few coils off the Wolff 16 lb (reduced power) hammer spring and still get 100% ignition in my 5946, with a light trigger pull. You can also replace the drawbar/trigger return spring, with a 2.5 lb spring however this requires full disassembly. After replacing springs and smoothing things, out my 5946 is very nice to shoot.

It is not possible to convert an older 5946 to TDA; the slides for the 5946 and 5906 are different.

I'm told it is possible to convert the "newer" 5946's (TSW?) to TDA if you get the TDA parts.

Midway got some grips in stock last week and I ordered one along with a spare magazine. I put it on just a few minutes ago, and I think it looks much better with the new grip. I also acquired a couple of Mec-Gar magazines for it so I should be good on this one now.
