Default 5904... I Need some help

Hello Everyone,
I'm new to these forums. I recieved this firearm as a gift. Lucky me, can't go wrong with a Smith. I need some help. The frame says it's a 5904 but it does not have the safety/decocker. Any idea what this is? Some limited edition or a Frankenstein of a couple firearms?

Welcome to the forum. What you have is a 5904 frame with a double action 9 mm slide that won't work without some gun smithing. I would not attempt to fire it without a gun smith checking it out first. It looks like the slide is hanging over the frame in the rear. Best of luck and hope it works out.

Yes, that's a 5904 DA/SA frame with a DAO hammer and trigger installed mated with a 5943/5946 DAO ( Double Action Only) Slide.
Not the prettiest combination in the world but if assembled properly it should operate safely.

I emailed smith and Wesson with the serial number. They said it was manufactured in 06/89 and it was a dao gun in 9mm. I'll be damned...I didn't know they made those.

Wow, Scoop!
That just doesn't sound right.
I've never seen or heard of anything like your pistol coming from the factory (not like that means anything).
06/89 sounds about right for a shipping date and it is definitely 9mm, but DAO?
If it were me I would triple check that info and then if it agreed I would letter that pistol (for documented verification) and put it up for sale as the rarest S&W variation ever produced.

Here's hoping you found a "four-leaf-clover".

Perhaps it was an agency special order. It is an interesting set up and certainly shootable. Most Smith DAO triggers are pretty nice too.I share the concern about the rearward overhang. It looks like it is not in battery. Does the slide move more forward than as shown in the picture? Looks like the hammer is back quite a bit also.
Looks like the perfect gift.
Jim
