Would it be a fair deal to trade my 6904 to a Shield (CA version)? or should I expect the Shield owner to ask for gun + $?

A Shield 9 should sell new at no more than $400 (I've seen less). I don't know the value of your pistol. I would just buy a new Shield. Mine was problematic at first, so I can suspect those sold/traded second hand may have been the same breed as mine, but without a determined owner to sort out the bugs.

depends on the condition,extras...box,mags etc of each gun,if your 6904 is real nice it would be about an even swap......I picked up a like new 6904,2 mags for about 325 if I remember,shields on sale don't go for much more.I'd rather have the 6904....you can pick up a shield anytime.

I'm assuming you live in California?

That presents some unique market conditions. Not sure how much a compliant shield sells for in CA, but if it's reasonable, you should just save for it, and buy it.


Im not one of those "never sell a gun" types. I freely sell and trade what doesn't work for me without a tear shed or second look back. But in the case of the California market, and the relatively inexpensive price of the shield, I'd be hesitant to make that trade unless the 6904 simply serves no purpose in your life. From a cash value, it's probably a straight across trade in my book. I wouldn't throw any cash the way of the shield owner, unless they are absolutely impossible to get in CA these days....

Like others here, I am partial to 3rd Gens... so trading a 6904 if in good mechanical and cosmetic condition for a Shield would never happen in my world. It just wouldn't.

I can't speak to the CA marketplace, but here in MA, a used Shield and a used 6904 could end up in the same value range depending on the conditions of the two guns. Without knowing more about each guns condition and other factors, it's very hard to say if a few bucks adjustment either way would be appropriate.

Well, I wouldn't describe my 6904 as pristine. I bought it new in 96 when I lived in Florida for a short while. After getting my FL ccw and shooting about 500 rounds, I went back to CA, and its been a safe queen until my interest in shooting came back after I assemble an AR, this was when obama first became president. There's no holster wear since you probably know how it is in CA, but shes been shot regularly since 2011, so you'll see the usual wear & tear.

Sorry to hear about your S&W hoc9, but mine has been flawless since the day one, never a hick up, even with my light reloads.

You already like it and have been shooting it regularly for the past 4 years. Why would you want to give up that regular shooting?

You will not enjoy shooting the Shield as much, from a recreational standpoint.

Go put it on Lay-A-Way and pay it off a little each week. Give up one movie night or dinner on the town each week and use that cash for your payment. In a very short time you will own both firearms.

In my younger days I had no cash, so 75% of my guns were purchased on Lay-A-Way. I found that having already paid partially for it motivated me to save, sacrifice or take on extra OT or side jobs to bring it home faster.

I'm with others ..... if you are in a State with restrictions...... I would not sell/trade a gun that I could not "easily" replace!!!!!

Thank you guys, I guess you're all correct. I asked because there was the feeling of hesitation on my end, and you all just made it clearer now. Colt saa, I probably will look into that lay away thing so I can own a Shield. If only I didn't have that impulse buy on that P64 I saw at AIM, I could have save a littler more and gotten the Shield.

I wouldn't do it. I suspect there will be lots of used shields on the market, cheap, with the Glock 43 coming out. Most of the narcotic cops I know carry the shield because of the size but Glock is the primary duty gun. I traded my shield last week for a 442 while I could. Keep the 6904 and pick up a used shield in a couple of month there should be a bunch on the market. I had paid $340.00 for mine new a year ago.

You can pick up a Shield anywhere, anytime. Keep the 3rd gen.

I hate HAVING to trade a good gun. I had to sacrifice my mod 10 to get a 686.
