Exclamation S&W model 59 jamming

Hello i am here for the purpose as to earn some insight as to why my Model 59 is jamming almost every single shot. First off let me explain what happens, when i fire the gun (even with a fully loaded mag that never failed until this started happening) it either doesn't fully eject the shell or simply doesn't fully close the slide. When it doesn't eject the shell it simply fires, fails to load the new shell into the chamber, and traps the spent cartridge into the ejection port. On the rare occasion that it does load a new round into the chamber the slide usually doesn't close all the way (about half a centimeter from closing) and from that position you simply cannot pull the trigger and you have to eject the round in hopes of having the next round not do the same thing. i am pretty sure its the ammo Im using (115gr. Expansion Industries reloads) but Im not sure. can someone please help to explain this occurrence and possibly how to fix it?

I'd say your right on the ammo, and it could even be your mag. Best of luck.

I'm no expert nor do I play one on TV so take my suggestion as one that is meant to help. Try some different ammunition. Check your extractor to see if it's in good shape not broken. Clean the chamber well. It could be and this is just a guess that the cases were not sized properly and are sticking in the chamber enough that the extractor is being pulled over the case rim/ groove.
Hope this helps. And welcome to the Forum.

I had a similar problem with my 59 after it sat in storage for a number of years. In my case it ended up being an extractor problem and I replaced both the extractor and the spring, but it may have only been the spring.

Try different ammo. Some 59`s only like ball ammo like 115 or 124 gr FMJ. It is a good idea to consider replacing magazine springs and the recoil spring. These pistols run there best cleaned and lubed. A swipe of oil on the feed ramp especially.
Good luck. Springs are available from Midway or Wolff Gunsprings.

Try some name brand ammo before you look at other possible issues. If the ammo is underpowered it will not cycle the slide properly with the same result you are describing. I once grabbed some "reduced power ammo" by accident "once" and had the same issue. Did not notice the "reduced power" notation on the box.

no its not reduced power its 115 grain ball ammo. but i took the gun apart and inspected the extractor and some other parts, and the extractor is definitely bent. but i cant find any replacements that are in stock on the internet.

Try Numrich Gun Parts. Just looked and they indicated they have a model 59 extractor in stock.

The first would be to clean it and a good oiling. Early S&W autos liked oil. Our range officers use to tell us we would know when we had enough oil on our 39s when it ran out the bottom of our holsters and onto our uniform pants. A bit of an overstatement but S&W 1st gens aren't Glocks. They need oil. If any piece of metal touches another piece of metal then give it a shot of oil.
The next thing I'd try was a different brand of ammo. Reloads can be particularly problematic because one is never sure if they've been properly resized, crimped correctly, reduced powder charge. It doesn't take much for one or more of those to be off to cause problems with 1st gen guns. A trip to WallyWorld for a box of W-W white box might save you a ton of work fixing something that isn't broken. At least white box will eliminate the ammo possibility.
I don't think a chipped extractor is your problem given that you're also having problems with it going fully into battery. Not saying you don't have a chipped extractor which would cause ejecting problems. Never load a S&W auto by dropping a round in the chamber and letter the slide forward. Always load from the mag or it will chip an extractor and cause problems.
It's also possible that recoil spring may need replacing. If it's a used gun hard to know if the previous owner ever replaced the recoil spring or replaced it with something other than standard. Some guys think if they're shooting +P+ ammo they need to replace the recoil spring with a stronger spring. That messes up the function using lighter loads. If it's the original spring then it's close to 40 yrs old and could have taken set and needs replacement.
Start with cheap fixes first, then move to more expensive and troublesome.

If you do replace the extractor, do yourself a favor and have it done by a qualified gunsmith that knows these guns. They need fitting.
Have someone else look at it before assuming there is something wrong with the extractor. It might look bent to you but might be its design.
