10 mm enthusiasts....
In the current American Rifleman they had a "throwback" page dedicated to 3rd gen 10mms. 25 years ago they featured a story titled "A pair of Tens".....they have re-published it online. The original story is fantastic....
It can be found at: American Rifleman | Throwback Thursday: A Pair of Tens
Just thought I'd share since I missed the 1st story 25 years ago (when I was 5) and I'm sure I'm not the only one

Thanks for sharing Dan.
I sold off all of my 10mm guns a while back, but I was a hard core convert for many years.

I thought this was interesting:

The gun also lacks the ubiquitous magazine safety, so it will not be sold on the commercial market. A civilian version, also known as the Model 1076 and equipped with a magazine safety, will be produced at some time in the future. Night sights will be an extra-cost option.
|
This would make it appear that any 1076 without the mag safety was an FBI gun, or possibly a police gun. Is that true? I don't think it is.
It is also my understanding that we really don't know how many FBI 1076 guns are out there because the FBI destroyed the ones in it's possession?

Love the 10's. I was active LE back in 1986 when the infamous FBI shootout occurred in Miami with a couple of bank robbers that caused them to look at the 10mm as a duty caliber. I like it and still have one although ammo can get a little pricey.
Later on I was privileged to attend the FBI National Academy in 1995. During part of the firearms training we were given the opportunity to shoots their H&K MP's in the 10mm caliber. It was a blast; pun intended!

Hopefully DMC will be along to clarify but I believe all the FBI/LE 1076 were the only ones without the mag safeties. All civilian produced 1076s had them.
This thread may cover it also....been a while since I read it all the way through

That said, I believe you are correct about the # of FBI 1076s out there. I know there is some speculation as to the number, but nothing definite.

I was looking at that the other day, but I read that original article when it came out. : I was already enjoying my S&W1006 for several months...
What's not to like about these...
The 5" Models 1006 / 1026 / 1046
The 4.25" Models 1066 / 1076 / 1086

S&Ws with out a magazine safety were only intended for the LEO market.
However many S&Ws had the magazine disconnect feature removed after they left the factory.

I remember when the MP5/10s were delivered in Miami.
Love at first shot
Had to have one of my own. However I used a 0-1-FULL fire control group in mine
