Default WTK: 5906 MODELO MILITAR

Are there any production figures on the 5906 Modelo Militar? How many were made total, how many left the country, how many remained here? Were they used by police, military, foreign government, who?

Thanks.

No responses...hmmm, is this model so obscure no one knows anything about them or is it just a lack of interest in this particular pistol?

Highlight your text and hit Google search. Found that information on another forum.

Cut and paste..

"One is a model 5906 Modelo Militar, from what little I can find out about it, there were 500 of them made with @ 320 being sold to a couple of South American companies. The balance were kept at S&W for a while and then sold to Lew Horton for distribution."

I think you'll also find some information on this forum, but you'll have to search Google to do it as VBulletin has a pretty weak search engine.

I have one of these pistols and I requested a letter from S&W about it. There were 100 Model 5906 pistols made for the Columbian military in 1999, marked "Modelo Militar", with 4-inch barrels, Melonite finish, and wrap-around grips. The serial numbers started with "LJF". They were not completely accepted by the Columbians and the remainder were sold through normal distribution channels.

Never lettered mine, but knew these were special, thanks all for the production information....

This is the only information I had found previously in a Latin American version of a S&W catalog

Highly doubtful,
My first was purchased in 2002 and had the LJF prefix, the second a year later, same dealer, and was a KJF prefix. Obviously both guns that never left the states, but S&W guns shared the same serially number prefix sequences (except PC guns) across the product lines, so I'd say that the difference in prefix had to do with when one was made rather than where it went to.... with little exception to that rule.

I should add the batch of 100 mine was part of was shipped from the factory on March 13, 2000 to Desportes Salvador Co. in Puerto Rico. It is not import marked.

Here is an English version of this gun. I got it lettered and it is one of only three manufactured with these exact markings that lew Horton sold back in 2001. I obscured the serial number digitally.

Why would it be?

Government stupidity? On the one hand it seems logical that the mfg ships a gun to another country and then takes it back as an unsold return with no need to mark an importer. OTOH, it seems completely consistent with Uncle Sniffles saying "It left the country, so now to come back it must be import-marked."

Perhaps I'm confused and these never actually left, just were produced and then not actually purchased/exported?

ETA: Or perhaps I'm stupid and missed the "Puerto Rico" part

No reason why it would be, as I believe Puerto Rico would be considered the same as any state. But there's no telling where these pistols actually went.
