4003TSW Buy it or not?
In a local gun store today I saw a Smith & Wesson 4003TSW in great condition. They have it listed for $650. It has 1 magazine and the blue plastic box. Looking on Gun Broker I see them selling for less and one has listed multiple times for $600 and is unable to sell. $650 appears to be too much.
Question 1. Is the 4003TSW a great gun to shoot?
Question 2. What is a good price for the 4003TSW?
Any help is appreciated.

I think you might want to look at condition of those listed on GB,
$650 is a good price for one in pristine condition.
Buy it.

Does seem a little high, but these days 3rdGens, & especially TSW's, are definitely not getting any cheaper. If you like 40SW(love it myself!)work the LGS down as much as you can then snap it up. Did the gun have a rail on it?

If it is in really nice/pristine condition, and not a LEO trade-in, I might see over $600 for one, but I still think that's a high price for a 4003TSW. I'd worry less if it was an all-steel 4006TSW.
It might be a good idea to take the slide off and look at the frame rails and lugs beforehand, see how much wear is present.

Thanks your input. I don't have any 40SW yet. I'll have to go back and look at it again. I went to another gun shop that had a 39-2 listed for $599. It looks fantastic, only 1 tiny mark on the frame. It had 2 magazines but no box. I bought it for $550 out the door. I don't think that is too high but I prefer to buy ftf rather than over the Internet. Any opinions?

As much as I'd love to have that gun in my collection/accumulation, $650 is more than I'd be willing to pay for it. But keep in mind that I've already got several other .40 3rd Gens in the collection and I am dirt broke at the moment.
But $500 and I'd own that gun ( or at least put it on layaway!) in a heartbeat. $525 to $550 and I'd probably have to sleep on it so long that someone else would snap it up before me.

I'm not a huge fan of the .40S&W, so I would personally walk without blinking. If it's a gun you like though, check the box. A correct box will have a factory-printed sticker on the end whose serial number matches the gun.
It seems HIGHLY unlikely that anyone kept the original box, but only 1 of the 2 magazines the gun would have come with, so I'd bet $1 that it's just an S&W blue plastic box. (Which one can buy on eBay etc).
My Blue Book is a couple of years old, but it lists $600 @ 98% and $700 @ 100%.
I agree, that a small premium for F2F and handling the gun is well worth it, so if the gun is truly pristine and especially if it's the correct matching box, then you're probably not doing horribly at $650. Certainly try for less, *ESPECIALLY* if not matching box. FWIW, I got a 6906 on GB sold as "with box and papers" but it wasn't the right box. Seller & I agreed on 10% off ($40) in compensation. YMMV and all that.

Glad I joined the forum. Have not been shopping for a handgun since I bought my CS-9 back in 99. Not aware prices of the Third Gen. models have increased so much lately. Only regret was not snapping up that Model 52 a dealer let me dry snap many moon ago. Think many here have some good investments!!

Good post on the topic of 3rd Gen boxes. Without a matching intact S&W sticker, it is most likely not the original box. I've been misled more times than I care to remember. You'd think I'd know better by now.
But that said, a correct period box, sans label but in decent shape, is still better than nothing.
And it is true that a lot of uninformed or uncaring S&W buyers sometimes steam or "GooGone" the damn labels off the original plastic box to better use them for range transport or similar, particularly if the label is already dirty or damaged.
For my poor man's collection (accumulation), I do often pay a premium for an original matching labeled box... but no more than $20-$25 extra if the box is not properly matched to the gun.

Disclaimer: I'm anal about this stuff...
I tend to look at it slightly differently - the owner who kept all the various paper bits and pieces is more likely to be the type of personality who takes really good care of the equipment. I want to buy stuff from those folks because while used, it's almost never abused. Thus I'm willing to pay a premium for a gun with a matching box, more because of what it SAYS about the gun's history than for what it IS by itself....if that makes any sense.
Helped a buddy pick up a pristine used gun just the other day - owner had the original paper box endpiece (cut off the cardboard box and stored in the nice plastic hard case), all the little paper hang tags, the card-stock backers from some accessories which came in that shrink-plastic packing, etc. Needless to say the gun looked nearly new - if you didn't check internal wear points and if someone hadn't obviously "test-fired" it recently (and not cleaned after), you would have thought the gun was NIB. That's MY kinda buy!

It makes perfect sense! I could have written that myself.
In fact, I did write those same words, more or less!

Well, I guess it depends on our local FTF options and prices. From what it sounds like, your local options are on the expensive side, so you have to consider the extra price you pay for that FTF deal. As well as the smaller pool of potential S&W 3rd Gens available.
Personally, I've done many deals online, most through Gunbroker, and have had very few issues, never ripped off outright. Best way to land a deal, IMO.

Personally, I could care less if the box is correct as long as the gun was in excellent + condition for that price, which I think is a bit high. Even for a TSW model. I'm more of a shooter than I am a collector. I do however take exception care of my firearms. I shopped for a 4003TSW for awhile but at the last minute opted for the 4053TSW.
It's an exceptionally good shooting 3rd gen 40 that conceals well and carries comfortably.
